The place looked great on the internet. Upon arrival, we were pleased to see a lovely cottage with a wonderful view. As advertised, the gardens around the house were spectacular. We were greeted by a friendly couple. The woman of the house showed us the dining room and sitting room, both of which were nice. Then she showed us to our room. This is the point at which both our hearts dropped with resounding thuds to the floor. The bathroom was so tiny one of us could hardly move in it (and we are thin)! It was shabby and leaky looking. There was a soggy used towel in the sink and another really old, thread bare towel on a chair. Everything about the room was shabby, dark and depressing. Our view was through a large, dirty window of what looked like a bleak utility yard with a shack in the corner. This is apparently where the owners stayed when guests were in the house. The whole thing was just mind numbingly depressing and we felt trapped as we'd booked for three nights.
We wouldn't normally back out of an agreement but since we hadn't yet given them a credit card number, we felt that what we had seen on the internet didn't accurately depict the reality of the dreariness of this room. We felt within our rights to walk away from it. No one else was there so I peeked in the other rooms. They were all just as awful.
After finding another, really wonderful place nearby to move to, we regretfully told the owner we were leaving.
