We had a most enjoyable stay at the Crab Tree Cottage in Muckross. We were a family of eight and were put in the Stag's Glen self-catering house behind the Crab Tree Cottage. We didn't know this would be the case until we arrived. It was beyond our expectations. The views were lovely, the accommodation was new, clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The bathrooms in each room were large and spotless. Our hostess included breakfast with our stay each day as we originally were booked into the bed and breakfast. We were treated very cordially and the hostess was most helpful with information we needed. We did have to pay in cash (euros) instead of credit card which was a little difficult but we would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone who is looking for a lovely holiday place to stay in Killarney.

Where to begin... first of all the grounds were beautiful, and the location was really terrific in terms of hiking, Muckross House, etc. But the stay itself left much to be desired.

The room was small and bright but down a very dark corridor. The bathroom was terrible. The shower was ridiculously tiny, and though being quite small ourselves, we wound up with our noses about 2 inches aways from the walls - which were spotted all over with mold. The shower head was clogged in parts, the drain was clogged (which left us standing in 3 inches of water), and the soap dish - which was the only place to rest anything in there, was broken. There were also cobwebs in the bedroom - AND one of the beds was extremely lopsided - which made for an unpleasant night's sleep.

Breakfast was fine, but nothing spectacular.

Breakfast was great, the conservatory style dining area is amazing and Lily's gardens are absolutely gorgeous. She makes you think anything and I mean ANYTHING can be grown in Ireland. The Muckcross House and Abbey are just a stone's throw away from the B&B which makes it a perfect base-camp for touring around Killarney without having to deal with a lot of the traffic and paid parking in the town center. The room was small and although ensuite, I was glad I am fairly thin because I wouldn't have been able to even fit in the shower. The mattresses were not great and I found at least 6 spiders (and I like spiders, but these were LARGE) lurking in corners throughout the bedroom and bathroom. Lily's husband is also a fantastic cook, since Lily had to take the train early that morning. All in all, the B&B was fine, but not great. I put a lot of faith in these reviews on TripAdvisor and ended up being a little let down in Killarney.

My husband and I just returned from Ireland, and Crab Tree B&B was our favorite B&B. You won't find a better location. It's on Mangerton Road, which is right next to Killarney National Park and Muckross House. It probably takes 5 minutes to walk from the B&B to the park, and only takes about 1 minute to drive there. The setting is beautiful--the cottage is surrounded by award-winning gardens, and breakfast is served in a conservatory that overlooks the gardens. Lily Cronin is an able host who is warm, conversational, and serves a fantastic, extensive breakfast--several kinds of cereal, numerous varities of yogurt, a full irish breakfast (eggs, rashers, bacon, tomato) cooked to order, soda bread, toast, jam, orange juice, and tea or coffee. A breakfast like hers would easily cost you 10 euro if you were to purchase it in town, which makes a stay at Crab Tree a cost-efficient option. As the rooms do not contain televisions, she has provided a common lounge for her guests, complete with a television and a plethora of books about Killarney. The only thing that I did not care for was the size of the room--too small to open your suitcase without placing it on the bed. However, that's a small sacrifice, considering the fantastic location, breakfasts, and warm hospitality. At 32 euro per person during high season, Crab Tree B&B is a bargain. It has become one of my favorite places in Ireland, and I will definitely be staying here again.
