First of all, my boyfriend and I called early in the day to book a room, because we were not sure what time we would arrive. They said straight away that we could book it if we really wanted, but there were plenty of free rooms, so we should be fine anyway. We preferred to book it and we booked a double, en-suite room over the phone, we were told that it was usually €23 p/p but that she would give it to us for €21p/p. However when we arrived, the room that had been reserved for us was a triple en-suite room, more expensive, for €25 p/p. And there weren’t any double rooms en-suite available anymore... We protested and eventually the girl told us that she hadn’t been there earlier, that we would have talked with some other receptionist and the best she could do was to reduce it a bit and she did us a favour by only charging us €23 p/p! If the mistake was theirs we shouldn’t have to pay for it! But we didn’t know the place, so we were afraid that at that time of the evening we wouldn’t get anything better that wasn’t too expensive... So we took it. But we made the huge mistake of not having a look at the room first, I suppose we were tired enough. Anyway, by then the sun was going down, and because
we really wanted to see the area, we just left our bags in the room and left. We arrived home quite late and quite tired, only to discover that there were pubic hairs in the bottom of the shower and really all kinds of hairs all around too, the handle of the toilet and the door handle were sticky, the sink was very dusty, the bed also had some hairs but the worst was that the toilet seat had some dry urine and the pillows smelled of unwashed heads, in fact we could swear that several people had been sleeping there since the sheets had last seen a washing machine... We left our showers (with flip flops on!) for the morning as there would be no point washing, just to get dirty and smelly again inside the bed! We threw the pillows onto our extra undesired and unneeded (and even dirtier) bed and fell asleep.
There was breakfast, of cereal or bread, butter, jam, as well as tea and coffee, basic but for those short of cash, it would get you started for the day. The building was very nicely decorated and the location was great. The staff weren't the most friendly, and we met three of them. About the one we met at our arrival, she not only over charged us as she was not caring for it at all, I had the sensation that she would have preferred that we would have given up on the room than to be there dealing with something that she was not responsible for... Then when we left in the morning the woman that sold us a locked place for our luggage payed the smallest amount of attention to our request as she was busy with something else at the moment. The best we can say is that she knew how to smile, but really it felt really fake and uninterested. Finally on collecting our left luggage, the man was on the phone, he wouldn't do as much as to acknowledge our presence until he'd finished his call, when I asked for the key to the luggage lockers he handed me a bunch, we got our bags and handed him back the keys and not once did he even look at us, never mind saying thanks or goodbye. Oh, and in the morning after shower when I went down to request a hair dryer, after asking if I should bring it down or leave it in the room, she told me to bring it down, but then, as I was turning back to the room, she said that I should bring only the hair dryer, not to worry with the linen, to leave it as it was... Of course, probably it was not washing week!
We've been to other hostels in Ireland, UK, and Europe, and seen bad, but this was just too much! I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. They say that you get what you pay for... not really in this case, because for our second night we stayed in a beautiful, clean, plush B&B, not so far from town by foot, with the option of a full Irish breakfast (included) and a very friendly and helpful lady as our host, all for €25 p/p! So, beware of the Railway Hostel in Killarney, you can get less than you’re paying for!
