“Should not have five stars”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We spent two nights with at the Muckross Park Hotel, Killarney, on the weekend of the 27th to the 29th January. I have to say we were very disappointed with our stay and the reasons are outlined below;

• On arrival at the hotel, we were shown to our room, it was a nice room but was at the back of the hotel, overlooking the car park and the room was freezing. The porter suggested that we take a walk around the hotel until the room heated up. At the very least we should have been offered a coffee if not a drink while we waited, after all this was supposed to be a 5 star stay.
• We tried to get down to the spa to take a look, this was at 18:30, and we were locked out, it does not close till 19:00. We had intended eating in the restaurant on the Friday evening on the ADVERTISED menu of 2 courses for €29-€30 (that was on the website), but were informed that this had been discontinued. As we intended dining with fellow guests on the Saturday evening we wanted a more reasonable menu for the Friday night. At this point our room was still cold so we decided to eat in the bar as we were, however the meal was not very satisfactory. We then returned to our room and it was only just warming up. Overall the pleasure of our stay on the Friday was somewhat diminished, and Friday was my actual birthday and the reason for our getaway.

• On Saturday afternoon we were looking forward to relaxing in the spa before dinner, on arrival at the reception we were told that we could not enter as it was full and that we should have booked, we had not been told that this was necessary, nor had several others that were turned away. When we eventually got a call to say that we could go down, it was to discover that that the out-door hot tub was not in use, and neither the sauna nor the steam room were functioning. The Jacuzzi was not very warm either.

I work as an H&S Officer, and to say the least you need to risk assess your pool and your sauna room. The pool has hidden hazards, steps and railings beneath the water that cannot be seen, and the tiles are loose or fallen off in the steam room. I intend writing to Fáilte Ireland and have already spoken to their Spa Assessor about the rating in this spa, it is most definitely NOT 5 star.

When our friends arrived on the Saturday, we had been so disappointed in our stay so far that we opted to eat out in town, a loss to your hotel of 4 full restaurant meals and several bottles of good wine.

We have 4 young children and it is very difficult to get away, when we do we like to enjoy the leisure of the Spa, especially the out-door hot tub and pool, neither of which you had on offer. The photos of the pool are very deceptive on your web site, it should be made clear that it is NOT a swimming pool. Between the none existent menu, the lack of functioning facilities in the spa and lack of a nice view we have been left feeling very cheated in our weekend away and that there was a lot of ‘False Advertising’ on your behalf.

You have a beautiful hotel with great potential, but you have lost every single customer that we met on that weekend but taking shortcuts to try and save money. You have lost a lot more than you have gained and with one lady writing on trip advisor about her experience you have probably lost some future potential customers, you have certainly lost us and our friends and any other friends that we may talk to about our stay. It is a pity because the hotel could be very comfortable, leaving people feeling pampered and relaxed. We came home feeling a little stressed and vexed after our weekend away.

Dear Past Guest,

Firstly, I regret that you did not enjoy your stay with us. I sincerely apologise that your room was not to the adequate temperature on arrival. We have air-conditioning in all rooms, so the room should have been to the correct temperture on arrival. I will be addressing this with our accommodation team.

Our Spa has a buzzer on the door to gain entry. Having checked the sign in sheets for the Thermal Suite during your stay, the Thermal Suite was open until after 7pm each evening, as there were a number of guests had signed in and out during these times. I regret that you were not informed that you needed to book use of the thermal suite in advance. We want to ensure that the thermal suite remains relaxing for our guests at all times and therefore it is necessary to control the numbers using it. We have just put in place a card which guests will recieve on check-in about the Thermal Suite, to ensure guests have the information about it in advance. Unfortunately our outdoor hot-tub was out of order for 3 days while we were awaiting a part, however the Vitality Pool & Jacuzzi were operating as normal. I also assure you that the tiling you refer to has been replaced 3 times in the last month, but due to the steam in the steamroom there was problems with the tiles settling. This has now been rectified. We put substanial resources each week in to ensuring any maintenance issues that occur in our spa are rectified as quickly as possible. As you point out, the hotel doesn't have a leisure centre pool, instead it was a beautiful thermal suite with vitality pool.

I regret you also did not enjoy your meal in the bar. As there are no specifics in relation to this, I am unable to comment further. We have just launched a completely new bar menu with dishes of a very high standard, which is recieving very positive feedback.

I assure you that we are certainly not taking shortcuts to save money - we have made substanial investments in maintaining and improving the property throughout the winter. I recieved many thank you emails from guests who stayed the same weekend as yourselves at the hotel. I regret you did not enjoy your stay and would be happy to speak to you further about your experience, should you wish to do so.

KInd Regards,

“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Stayed here two nights for a wedding.the food is the best I ever had in a hotel. Friendly staff and beautiful location. Only complaint is that you have to pay 30 euro extra to avail of leisure centre. This should be included in price. As it happened I didnt have time anyway. Would love to go back again.

“Very Enjoyable Stay but..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

My husband, our 10 month old son and I stayed in Muckross in January of 2012. We were at a wedding there the summer before and thoroughly enjoyed the reception so when I saw it on Hotels.com at a good rate for 5 star I immediately booked it.
The hotel was lovely but I don't think it was of a 5 star standard. Our room was lovely but I was expecting more modern gadjets in the room including a flat screen tv. (I have only stayed in 5 star accommodation in Ireland once before and the room that we stayed in, on that occasion was far superior to the room we received with Muckross Pk Hotel).
The one fault I had with my stay was that I thought they had a pool (from looking at the pictures it looked like a pool) and when the 3 of us went down for a swim we were told that it was only over 18's and that they didn't have a pool, it was a vitality pool. Our stay was primarily centred on swimming with our son so it was hugely disappointing that we could not do that over the weekend. And instead we had to take turns to go down to use the Spa (And it was very couple orientated so it looked odd being on your own). Now from looking at the website and hotels.com website, it does say that it is over 18's but it needs to be alerted in a higher capacity, not in the same font. The Spa is beautiful (even though the hot tub broke down on the Saturday) and is so relaxing and at all times the staff were extremely apologetic about the situation.
Another negative is that the Spa only allows 15 in at a time and so you need to book it if this occurs. On the saturday evening, it was very busy and my husband arrived down to the Spa, and was turned away as it was full. He booked it and got a phone call 20 minutes later but again this should have been explained to us when we booked in. And this was only January, what about peak season...

All staff were brilliant, friendly and professional at all times, the food in Molly Darcy's and breakfast was fab and we really did enjoy our stay but unfortunately I picked that hotel thinking we'd be in the pool with our son for alot of the weekend and that was really disappointing.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review on Tripadvisor. I sincerely regret that you were not aware the Thermal Suite in our spa was for adults only. Although we provide this infomation to hotels.com, unfortunately we do not have control of how they present it on their website. Regarding restricting the numbers that go in to the Thermal Suite at any one time, I'm sure you understand that it is our duty to ensure that those using the spa & having treatments have a truely relaxing experience. It is very rare that the numbers reach capacity, however last Saturday was particularly busy, as most guests stayed in-house Saturday afternoon.

I also note your comments regarding your room. As the original part of the hotel is in existance since 1795, the rooms in the orignal house vary in size. We also have a new wing built in 2006/2007. Some guests like to stay in the orignal house and some prefer to stay in the new wing. However, all our rooms were refurbished during at the same time to include marble bathrooms with mist free mirrors, heated towel rails, in room control air-conditioning, dvd players, bathrobes, slippers, mineral water, etc. Although our tv's are not flat screen, they do offer a wide variety of channels. As we are located in the National park, we are currently investing in activity amenties for guests such as enhancing the spa, complimentary bikes for guests to use, complimentary walking guide, etc - However, we do hope to get around to upgrading the TV's over the next while.

I am pleased to read you enjoyed our food & found our team to be friendly during your stay.

I thank you again for giving us your feedback and hope you may consider visiting us in Muckross again.

Kind Regards,

“Lovely relaxing stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We stayed here on the 20th and 21st of january, 2012, found the staff very pleasent to deal with and very helpful, we were down for a concert in the inec and got a very good deal for our stay in the hotel, it is very well situated across from the entrance to muckross house and gardens, the gym is very well equiped and we found Cloisters spa a very relaxing experience. This was our second visit to this hotel and we would recommend it totally, We have stayed in a lot of hotels in and around killarney and this one is no doubt worth it's 5 stars.

“Very Enjoyable Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Stayed In Muckross park for two nights recently with my girlfriend. Lovely hotel , nice rooms and lovely breakfast including delicious pancakes. tried some room service dessert which was also gorgeous.
The complimentary use of the spa is nice , but treatments are expensive so we didnt get any there.
One negative during our stay was when we wanted to book the NEW 29.50 two course set menu. When I asked reception the girl tried to direct me to Molly Darcys Pub next door. I told her that it was for there own restaurant according to website ,she genuinely didnt seem to know about it but went to check , she returned to tell me it was no longer in operation. In that case it should no longer be on there website.
Also surprised to see paint peeling off the wall in bathroom , not very 5 star , we were told by the man that brought our bags up that they were expecting new flat screen tv soon , room also had dvd player.
Overall a excellent stay and would return.

Dear Past Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback on Tripadvisor. My apologies that the 2 course menu was still advertised on our website, this was an error on our part. I am delighted to read you enjoyed breakfast and your stay in general.

Each winter we try to repaint all rooms & bathrooms, so I assure you we are working through the rooms at present.

Thank you again for your feedback.
