“Disappointing stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2010

We had read reviews but were rather disappointed in our stay. The rooms, while clean, were tiny. No room for us and luggage. We were 'ordered' to fill out our breakfast requests before we even had a chance to catch a breath. There were 5 of us and Joan as us to please only pick 2 items so she would not have to cook so many different things. We ended up with 3. Being on a tight schedule, we got to the dining room at 8:30 only to be told that we were lucky to even get breakfast - she had over slept and we would all be eating the same thing. We got eggs which were good but not what anyone had ordered. On our first evening we had wanted to gather in her lovely sitting room but found it occupied by long term teenage quests who were watching (loud) TV and then locked us out of the room. We all crowded into one bedroom for a chat and to plan. After the crazy breakfast, we did visit with Joan (kids gone to class) and she really is delightful. Over all not our best Irish B & B stay.

“What a find!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2010

Joan O'Dea has created a wonderful and charming B&B in the heart of Galway. Just a walk to Galway City or Salthill. Joan could not have been a more gracious host. Made all of our arrangements for the tours we wanted to go on, and had great suggestions. The room was clean and the breakfast delicious. Would recommend this B&B to anyone who asks.

“Delightful stay in Galway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2009

After looking through different B & B reviews in Galway, I decided to stay at the Periwinkle and I am glad with my decision. Joan was a gracious host and went out of her way to help me plan a day trip to Connemara and the Aran Isle. She even drove me to the bus station for the day trip and later to the train station when I was leaving. The B & B is on a quiet road but it is easy to walk into the town center if you need to or to watch a sunset at the pier. If I stayed in Galway again, I would go back to the Periwinkle no doubts.

“Dirty place”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2009

This was our second visit to Galway and we really looked forward to our stay at the Periwinkle. However, the room and bathroom had not been cleaned properly for quite a while. There was not even an attempt to clean the bathroom after the first day. Although the location is not too bad, it is not a pleasant walk to the city center. The pavements on the recommended route were dirty and one is really exposed to the wind when it comes across Galway Bay.

Periwinkle really stood out like a sore thumb among all the other wonderful B&B's where we stayed during our recent trip to Ireland. We cannot recommend this place.

“Nice, Quiet, Convenient”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2009

Periwinkle is a very nice b&b in a quiet residential neighborhood far from traffic, with ample on-street parking. Our room was small, but not uncomfortably so. Joan, the inkeeper, serves a good, hearty Irish breakfast.

I walked to Eyre Square on the far side of the downtown area in 20 minutes, so it's little more than a mile away. The route is all residential until you get to within a block or two of downtown.

Galway Bay is less than a quarter mile away. Periwinkle is just across the wesern border of Claddagh, the area made famous by the Claddagh ring and Bing Crosby ("...watch the moon rise over Claddagh, and see the sun go down on Galway Bay.") Joan believes the lyricist must have had her neighborhood in mind. The b&b is on the eastern edge of Salthill with its promenade.

Joan was very friendly, and even gave us a ride to the edge of downtown.

We'd stay there again.
