“Double Check Your Reservation!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2005

After corresponding three different times with Eileen at the Knockrea B&B, she still gave away our reservation. We even called her from the airport in London the night we were arriving to confirm our reservation and were told that they were ready for us. By the time we showed up at 9pm (we warned them we were going to be a late arrival), they said that there was a mistake in the reservation. I cannot tell you how frustrating that can be at that hour. What upset me most was that Eileen wasn't even that apologetic with the mistake.

However, she did book us at another B&B down the street that was fine, though not up to the quality we had researched for. Thankfully, though, that other B&B welcomed us, were waiting for us outside their house to arrive, and made sure that our 1 year old daughter felt welcome in their home. I'll be posting a great review on their site, for sure.

I'm sure that Knockrea is a good Guesthouse. It looks nice from pictures. Just be sure that you get more than one piece of written confirmation from Eileen (even then she might give away your reservation like she did to us!).

“A Good Option with Great Breakfasts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2005

We had a little difficulty finding Knockrea when we first arrived in Salthill, but once we found it, we were not disappointed. Our room was spacious, and the bathroom was the largest one we had when we were in Ireland. She also provides tea-making facilities in your room, although ours needed to be cleaned thoroughly before use. Eileen is a very plesant hostess, and her breakfasts were great. If you want to stay near town, Knockrea is an affordable option, and, if you were to pay for the breakfast somewhere else, the one she provides would undoubtedly cost at least 10 euro--which makes her guesthouse a cost-efficient option. I would not say that the location of Salthill is all that charming, however. The city of Galway or further out into the countryside holds far more charm. Next time, I will probably stay further outside of town. In short, if you don't mind a 15-20 minute walk into town and a location that isn't all that interesting, then give Knockrea a try. It's worth the money for the space and the breakfast.

“Absolutely wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2005

I have been to Knockrea twice in the past two years, and plan on going back next winter. Eileen, the owner, is absolutely wonderful in making you feel like you're at home and planning day tours and giving advice on the sight seeing. In the winter, the prices are incredibly reasonable (35 euro per person), and the breakfasts are great! I would recommend this to anyone who is going to visit Galway

“Nice place for an overnight”

My family (2 children, hubby, father-in-law, and brother-in law) stayed here one night in Sept. 2004. We arrived around 5:30 after the 4 hour drive from Dublin. Eileen was there to greet us and quickly showed us to our rooms. We had a family room (4 twin beds) and father and brother-in law had two twin beds. The rooms were very nice, with pine floors and fluffy beds, and the bathroom had a shower/bath. Unfortunately the pressure in the shower wasn't great but we had resolved that we wouldn't let something trivial like this ruin our stay. What did ruin our stay was the fact that the airline lost my luggage (I was travelling with 5 males, so for them to lose MY luggage I just could not comprehend). Eileen was more than glad to keep an ear out (as the airline said they would deliver my luggage that evening) and during our stay she was pleasant without being intrusive. We went out to enjoy Salt Hill and arrived back to find that the airline had not delivered my luggage, but our room beckoned and we all slept well (quiet location, and our room was in the rear). Our beds were comfy and the children actually slept in a bit late in the morning. A full Irish breakfast awaited us in the lovely little dining room of Eileen's house. Everything was delicious (breads, wonderful oatmeal, eggs, fresh juice and tea, of course, as well as an assortment of yogurts). After filling our bellies, we thanked our lovely hostess and were on our way to enjoying the west coast of Ireland.

“Owner makes you feel at home”

My wife and I stayed at Knockrea for four nights beginning May 1, 2004. We very much enjoyed our stay. The place is clean and cheerful and reasonably well-located. It's biggest assest, however, is the owner, Eileen. She was so kind and helpful to us during our stay. She arranged day tours for us and provided flawless directions and advice. Knockrea is a warm and comfortable place to stay for your visit to Galway. We recommend it!
