I had booked a 3-night stay at the Mercer hotel back on Nov. 25th. The offer on the hotel's website was: pay for three nights accommodation, up front, and the price would be reduced. Since I was traveling on a budget, I jumped at the offer. I emailed the hotel before I left the states, on Dec 22nd, and got an email saying that they were closed for Christmas and would reopen on Dec. 30th. I saw this as no problem, as we were not booked at the hotel until that date.
The problem began, though, on the afternoon of Dec. 30th. I began calling the hotel at 4pm, and the hotel's voicemail said that reception was busy and to leave a message. Since they would just be opening, I did not find this odd and left a message. I continued calling the hotel and got the same message for the next four hours. At this point, I started to worry.
We arrived at the Mercer Court, student housing run by the same group that owns Mercer Hotel, and the night guard informed us that the hotel was closed but that he could let us stay in one of the dorm rooms. We continued calling all the numbers we could find, including The Mercer Group Accommodations. Nothing. Since we didn't arrive at the dorm until 9pm, I figured we would find no other room and took the young man's gracious offer.
The next morning, we walked by the hotel again hoping it would finally be open. At this point we found a formal letter stating the hotel was sorry but they would not reopen again and they had transferred our reservation to the Grafton Capitol hotel. This was the only information I had received about the state of affairs, even after numerous phone calls and emails to the hotel and their managing agent.
The Grafton Capitol hotel was place I read about here, and because of their boisterous nightclub downstairs, I specifically did not book this hotel for our vacation. What could I do, no one returned my calls, or emails.
After coming back to the states, I wrote to them repeatedly about getting a refund for a trip that I did not pay for or was advertised to us. As of yesterday, the financial agent for the hotel stated it was still closed and that it would be best to go to our credit card company for a refund, which I have done.
