Well..where to start?
This is my 6th visit to Dublin in about 1,5 year. I love the country and people. What a friendly bunch. The Irish are very chatty and always friendly towards strangers, always willing to have a chat. With a general attitude of "ahh..it's all Grand"..and "we will manage"..you have to love them.
It's a lovely place to get around and as it's my 6th visit I know my way round Dublin really well. The transport system is really good, and there is an abundance of Taxi's..way too many maybe. You can be stopped by a taxi and asked if you need a lift to the airport if they see you with a suitcase.
Well, back to my accommodation: I have stayed with StayDublin 4 times out of the 6 visits to Dublin. They have apartments spread over the City, and for the price they are great value for what you get.
I stayed between the 5th-9th of January. This is also my second stay at the Millennium Towers. Great location, right in the center of the city, you can#'t really ask for a better location. This also has it's downsides as it's right on a busy walkway, loads of noise and also on the route for many party goers on their way home from a night out in Temple Bar area.
I booked a 1 bedroom app. And was given a 2 bed which is great, but I only used the one room off course, being alone. On arrival you do a self check-in. They send you an email 2 days prior to arrival with a code to get into the reception are and another one for the safe box to pick up your key.
There are 3 keys, one to get into the building where you are staying, second one for the landing doors and the third for the door to the apartment. That can be a bit complicated when you are out at night for a few drinks and have to get in at night. The key for the landing didn't work so someone had taped over the lock on the door which had then come undone and the landing door was locked, key didn't work so I had to go up one floor, take the lift down and unlock it. I then set to work on finding some cardboard to put in the lock so anyone coming home wouldn't run into the same problem.
On the day of my arrival I went to a local bakery and bought a lovely loaf of bread, warm and crusty and some pate. Looking forward to this i got back into the flat which has as nice kitchen area and opened the drawer containing cutlery/kitchen utensils. No bread knife, actually no big knife at all. So I sliced my big crusty loaf with a small table knife..aw. Totally ruined the bread as i mite as well have used a fork.
The window next to the kitchen area was so caked in dirt I virtually couldn't see out of it. Ah well, I wasn't there for the view. I sat down on the sofa to eat my sandwich and took the remote control for the television to turn it on. Pressing away, nothing..checked the tv was on..still nothing. Took the back of the remote, no batteries. I found the housekeeping who were very nice and they supplied me with coffee sachets(missing too) and replacement batteries. Went back to the aptm and put them into the remote, still nothing, so I gave up.The light outside the front door was nonexistent and as the entrance is in a dark corner it's a bit of a process getting in the front door after dark. Also finding the apartment when arriving was a bit of an issue.Aptm 48. It was located on the first floor, but as I couldn't see any signage i went up and down on the floors until I found out that it was located out in the courtyard. Numbers are a bit all over the place as 44/45 are inside on the 1st floor, 48/49 are on the next floor. Bit confusing. A floorplan at the entrance would maybe be a good idea?
The last thing is having guests over for a drink in the evening. The buzzer system at the main door doesn't work. It didn't work last time I stayed there either. So you do have to run down and let people in. Having 3 friends over did mean 3 trips down to the door. This can also be an issue if you are several people staying there as you only get the 1 set of keys so if your not going home at the same time it can mean a few trips to let the others in.
I do enjoy the price/location of the apartments, but did notice that they had been renovated lately. I'm not quite sure in what way thou. I had a feeling that number 48 wasn't used that often, and I did ask if there was anything else available but was told that they were fully booked. I did also make house keeping aware of some of the issues.
I was told that there are in the process of getting a manned reception in the main building which I guess will resolve some of the issues and make it easier to get help when the housekeeping go home in the afternoon.
But don't get me wrong, the staff are really helpful and very friendly and they will help where they can. I think one of the best apartments I have stayed in is Christchurch Hall apartments, which are also run by the same company and on the opposite side of Dublin but still only about 10 min. walk from the center.
All in all, apart from the negatives it's still a great place to stay. The issues I had were all cosmetic and minor issues and big points could be scored if stay Dublin took a bit of time just to get them sorted. Window cleaning is an obvious one and maybe checking the other things everytime someone checks out to ensure it's all working. If your going to supply a kitchen with plates, oven, pots and pans then you need to expect that maybe someone will use it and ensure that there are a few knives to make/prepare the food with. Still..3 out of 5 stars. I will be in Dublin in 2-3 months time again.
