I stayed at the Royal Dublin for two nights while on business in the city. The hotel itself looks poor from the outside, and inside is not much better. The room at first appeared fine, however it wasn't particularly comfortable, and was a little on the cramped side. The bathroom was fine; nothing more, nothing less. I did notice that accross the hall appeared to lead to the party / conference area. While this didn't have any impact for me at the time, I imagine it would have been extremely annoying had there been a party during my stay, as the walls seem paper thin in this building.
My dealings with the staff were mostly fine, however long waits at the front desk for attention did get on my nerves, and the policy with access to the 'residents only' bar is bordering on the ridiculous, I presented my keycard, in its wallet (which had my room number written on it by the woman who checked me in), only to be told that someone else had already used that room number to gain entry! I was travelling alone, and had not given my room number to anyone, so clearly some chancer had used a random room number and the bouncer had accepted this without asking them for any proof. In the end, after involving the reception staff, I was allowed in, and for the pint of Guinness I had in there, it wasn't even worth the hassle.
Breakfast served was unimpressive, a bit cold, and didn't taste too fresh. After experiencing that on the first morning, I decided not to eat at the hotel again during my stay, favouring cafe Kylemore accross the road for breakfast, and was not stuck for dinner choices as there are many eateries in this area.
All in all, I didn't reccomend this hotel to my colleagues, and will request that my company does not book this again for business trips to Dublin. There is better value out there, and while the location may be convenient, I still feel I'd rather walk / take a bus to get around the city and stay somewhere more pleasant!
