“Mother and daughter bonding time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

My Daughter booked this hotel for her and I to spend some much needed quality time and suffice to say that is what we had, the staff were very courteous on arrival and throughout the whole weekend. The hotel was spotless clean and the service was second to none. Our room overlooked the Dublin mountains which was great and the beds were very comfortable also. The food was in the bar was very reasonable(especially for the portions served)and well presented. Breakfast was served by a lovely lady(kathy,I think her name was)and the was plenty of variety to suit every palate.I would have no hesitation in recommending this Hotel to family and friends. A big thank you to all the staff and especially to Darryl for a great weekend.

“Second review, second chance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

I previously wrote a review on The Plaza Hotel some time ago and it wasn't a very positive one (with good reason) but I've stayed there since the review and this time, I'm pleased to say, I have a better one to post.

I had sworn that I'd never stay in The Plaza Hotel again, after being there twice previously and both the rooms were hideous (Both smoking rooms, I might add, which I requested)
But this New Year's Eve, my partner and I needed somewhere to stay and The Plaza was the best value, so I reluctantly agreed to stay there.

When we arrived, we were welcomed by a very nice girl on reception and I asked for a smoking room but she informed me the smoking rooms were fully booked and would a non smoking room do? I agreed and said it would be fine, and now I'm so glad I did, because when we got to our room on the third floor, we were gobsmacked.

The room was huge and absolutely spotless.
It was such a difference from the smoking rooms we'd been given in the past...Polished to perfection, no musty smell, clean and well furnished-I was amazed
I wondered if the non smoking rooms were of a higher standard than the smoking ones because it was like being in a different hotel.

I was really happy.
Big comfortable double bed, lovely views of Watergate Park and flawless bathroom, it was ideal.
Cable TV and a trouser press, kettle and tea/coffee facilities-our remote control wasn't working but the manager came up straight away to fix it, and that was fine.

We decided to have our evening meal in Grumpy McClafferty's, the pub downstairs and OMG as the youngfolk say-it was the best ever!
I had pasta bolognese-it came in a lovely big bowl, with penne pasta and plenty of rich tomato sauce and minced beef, with shaved parmesan cheese-it was delicious and unbelievably good value at only €9.50.

I had a great night's sleep in the room and I would not hesitate in recommending it to people.
I do think the non smoking rooms are of a higher standard than the smoking ones, so that might be something to keep in mind, but do this and you're in for a pleasant stay!

Our night's stay only cost €59 for two adults which was very good value compared to another hotel in the area that was charging €99 for the same tariff.

I was also impressed to see there are now welcome booklets in the room, which they didn't have back when I stayed some years ago.

Room Tip: I think the non smoking rooms are much nicer and bigger than the smoking rooms.

“Average hotel, you get what you pay for”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

This hotel does not live up to its name. It is not like staying in the Plaza hotel in New York! The room was large and spacious. However the decor dated. The bathroom was clean and also large which makes up for the unhelpful staff. Staying over the Christmas break also meant that the cafe/bar was also closed for a some of the time. Overall, the room was spacious and clean. Location was close to the shopping centre and LUAS; tram service into Dublin city. I would not call this a 4 star hotel!

Dear Melbourne001,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on tripadvisor.

I was disappointed that you had a quite mixed experience however I have taken all your comments and feedback on board.

I would agree that our bedrooms are dated however we are in the process of refurbishing all of our 122 guest rooms.

I am disappointed that you did not have the opportunity to experience the food and beverage on offer in McClafferty's Bar or the Vista Cafe, we have had exceptional feedback recently and I'm sure you would not have been disappointed.

I have passed all of your comments onto the Management & Staff and we will use all of your feedback to ensure these issues are not repeated.

Please accept my sincere apologies, I do hope this isolated experience will not deter you from returning to The Plaza Hotel in the future.

My team would welcome the opportunity to restore your faith in the hotel.

Kind Regards,
Darrell Penney

“Definately not 4 star”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Just back from a one night stay at this hotel and it was one of the worst ever for a supposed 4 star property. The girl at check was lovely and very polite but that's about as good as it got.
Our room looked nothing like it the ones advertised on their website. It looked more like something from the 1980s, with the exception of the bathtroom, which was good. However, the pressure is the shower was laughable.
The room itself was tatty, there was random stickers on the wall, dirty and marked table tops and the hotel staff can't even be bothered covering their dirty and broken bed bases with a sheet. Ours was a smoking room but had no ash tray, it also had tea bags, coffee, sugar etc but no kettle. The TV was as old as the manky curtains, the heat terrible, while the noise of other guests in the middle of the night was very annoying.
We ate in the bar and had to wait over ten minutes for a menu alone, the food was soggy, chips overcooked and a certain part of my partner's meal was either past its sell by date or under cooked. Utterly vile.
The breakfast, which we ordered to our room, was delivered very late and staff failed to bring tea and coffee as ordered and even failed to bring basics like salt and pepper.
The only thing this place has going for it is it's staff and the excuse of doing rennovations doesn't wash as you are not informed of that to begin with at reception.
We took a trip to another local hotel, The Maldron, the same night for a drink and it looks like it's in a different league. My advise would be to book in there not the Plaza, or should I say Fawlty Towers!

Room Tip: Stay in the much nicer Maldron down the road!

Dear Padrepio,

Thank you for taking the time write a view of The Plaza Hotel on trip advisor.

I was extremely disappointed to say the least to read your comments and feedback. I was also disappointed that with all the issues in your bedroom, you did not report these to the Manager on Duty. I assure you, you would have been moved straight away and also I would have investigated fully into how a room with so many issues was put back on the system. It is also very surprising as we have a first class Housekeeping Department who have been credited by Failte Ireland in a recent inspection for improving the standards around the hotel.

With regard to the food and beverage, there simply is no excuse for delivering such poor standards, again I only wish this was brought to the attention of the Duty Manager who would have rectified the situation straight away.

I appreciate your positive comments with regard to the staff.

I have spoken to both the Housekeeping Manager & The Food & Beverage Manager with regard to the issues experienced.

We strive to exceed our customers expectations of us at all times, it appears on this occasion we have failed. Please accept my apologies.

I do hope you will give me and my team the opportunity of restoring your faith in the hotel in the future.

Kind Regards,
Darrell Penney
General Manager.
