“The Clarence Needs Some Sprucing Up”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We spent one night for work at the Clarence...great location (near Trinity College, Dublin Castle, Temple Bar) but The Clarence has clearly not had any updates since they opened. What was probably really great wood work in the bedrooms is scuffed on the floor and worn down. Our bathroom mirror had a piece of tape on it to hide a crack and the rubber bathmat was dotted with mildew. The people who work there are nice, the prices are reasonable and the restaurant serves a nice breakfast (which was part of our room rate)...but the rooms look very dated...more like a glorified dorm room than a hotel.

“We got what we expected!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Stayed with my partner for 1 night, and we were prepared for a night in Temple Bar! If you want a quiet romantic night in, or cosy family evening....don't stay in close proximity to the busiest and probably best area for nights out in Dublin! Go to the Cork or Kerry or Galway!
Our room was on the 4th floor, with a beautiful balcony and views out over Dublin.
Bed was huge, room small but lovely. Bathroom was good too. Not the best, but certainly not the worst.
Didn't see Bono or The Edge...sadly. Perhaps there is a good reason there are no photos/references to the owners anywhere in the hotel?

“too rock'n'roll for me”

This is a really nice hotel with a load of good things going on. Central location, excellent staff, really smart rooms, however if you get a room ending 11, 12, 13, 14, ask for a move, you'll be over a nightclub and the noise, even with the double glazed windows closed, is too much,

If I was on holiday I would join the revellers, but I was up at 05:00 to get a fligh to Dublin, it is now 00:37 the next day and I'm hoping that tiredness will defeat the noise because I can't,

Previously coming to Dublin I've stayed in the Westin - that's where I'll be staying when I'm nex there. Fair enough for Bono and the Edge, but if you have to work tomorrow this place is a no.

“Expensive and not really worth it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

I guess Dublin's an expensive city, but I felt we paid a lot for not all that much. We got a room upgrade to what they call a 'superior' room (which is basically just a bit bigger - certainly not worth the extra 20 euros).

The room was pleasant enough - decorated in that bland style you see in hotels - and could possibly have done with a revamp. Still, and the bed was comfortable. We were on the Temple Bar side so noise would certainly have been a problem if we'd needed the windows open - I certainly wouldn't stay here in summer. The bathroom was large, but the shower didn't work very well - the whole suite had the air of slight dilapidation. Maybe that's just Dublin post financial crisis.

The breakfast was good - quality ingredients cooked to order, none of your hotlamp buffet stuff. Though as you pay extra for breakfast, I would hope so too. Service was also decent enough.

So, yes, overall not particularly impressed. For 135 euros a night I would hope for more.
