“Huge Self Catering House - perfect for our hen do!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2009

We stayed at the 5 bedroom self catering house for a long weekend in July for one of my friend's hen do. Una was so helpful leading up to the stay - great email communication and she even got us in some shopping for when we arrived. The lounge/Kitchen is a great size for socialising a a quick pre drink or two before you go out. All the bedrooms are a good size and all have an ensuite bathroom which really helps when there are 9 of you getting ready for a night out!! Really easy to get a taxi too and from town and a reasonable price too. A good thing because when you get into down, food and drink is very expensive!
All in all a really good stay - would highly recommend it over staying in a hotel. Especially when there is a big group of you! Thumps up!!

“Brilliant service & a huge self catered house”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2009

9 of us rented the house for a hen do - and we were really pleased. The hosts couldn't do enough to help, answering questions, providing taxi numbers, taking our tesco delivery in... and the house itself was even better than the pictures suggest. The living space was big enough for fun and games, the kitchen had everything you need and there are loads of beds and bathrooms. A bit of a walk from town centre, but taxis are very reasonable.

Many many thanks to Una, Dominic and Angela for making our stay such a brilliant one!

x

“Fantastic accommodation and hosts that go out of their way!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 July 2009

Being the best man it was my job to find the accommodation in Cork for the stag party, and we found a cracker!! 12 of us, blokes ranging from late 20s to early 60s, stayed in the 5-bed house, in the courtyard.
The house had a large bedroom off the lounge and 4 good sized bedrooms upstairs. The massive lounge / kitchen / dinner was fantastic as we were all together as a group and it was secluded enough that we didn't disturb anyone. It even has its own access.
Una, the host, was fantastic and couldn't do enough for us, she even went shopping for us so it was all ready when we got there :)
The place is about 10 min walk to the bars and 15 min walk to town (or a cheap taxi).
I would highly recommend this place to anyone, and everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We all said we would go back in an instant!

“Fantastic Place! Book it Immediatly!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2008

We stayed at Acton Lodge for my Brothers stag weekend in Nov 2008. There were 13 of us and we had the self contained house to ourselves and some rooms in the main house.

I have honestly not met such friendly people, Dominic, Una and their Daughter, went above and beyond what they needed to and it really made the difference.

For example, we went to the dogs on Friday and Dominic didnt think that it has race nights on that day and came over especially to tell us and gave me his phone to ring and check as he didnt want us to have a wasted journey. Also Una brought an extra iron over for us and it was these little touches that were so nice.

The downstairs area with kitchen and sitting room etc in the house in massive and even when all 13 of us where it there we looked lost! All the bedrooms have shower rooms and they were all great.

It was so nice to go out for the nights etc and be able to come back and all sit up drinking and chatting, in a way you cant in a hotel.

It cost us 80 euros each for whole weekend (so cheap!) and was just brilliant from start to finish.

I seriously cannot praise this place enough, if you are a large party etc this is the place to stay, its so close to everywhere u need to be and the welcome was just fantastic, it was like a home from home.

Thanks again Dominic and Una!

Thank you for your kind comments. It was our pleasure to have you and your 12 male companions for the weekend. You were such a respectful and appreciative group.
I have to say, the people that we accommodate from the United Kingdom are a credit to your country. We have had many stag groups from the U.K. to stay and we have never, ever, had one tiny problem with any one of them.
I am so delighted that you were happy.

“Boarding house”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2008

After reading the reviews on tripadvisor we booked in here and when we got there we wondered if we were in the right place. Greeted by a man who said he'd expected us earlier (well there was a bit of a delay with the hire car but Acton had our credit card details), gave us breakfast times, told us our room was on the first floor and gave us a key. It was fine but not as warm a welcome as we received at other places. Twin room, as requested, had a double and 2 singles plus a lot of old furniture and a bed lamp and it had the ambience of a boarding house. Was noisy between the road out front and the stairs on the other side of the thin walls. No glasses in the room or tea/coffee facilities.
Breakfast was a fine Irish fry up, but at 80 euros for two, we found nicer and cheaper places in other towns.

I am so sorry that you were not completely happy with your stay at Acton Lodge. Such a pity. I am aware of the room in which you stayed. Room No. 2. This is a very large room normally occupied by 4 persons.
The "old" furniture to which you refer, wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside lockers, lamp and beds were all purchased locally during 2006. The dressing table and armchair are indeed, considerably older, but in very good condition, therefore, in this climate of conservation and eco friendliness, I am loathe to discard items that still serve their purpose adequately.
If you were offended by the comment on your later than anticipated arrival, I apologise for this, however, having your credit card number does not guarantee payment should you not arrive. There seems to be one rule for the card holder and one rule for the service provider. Not your fault I know! However, in view of the fact that you had mentioned in your e mail your time of arrival to be 7pm. and arrived at a considerably later time, this situation does lead to stress for people in our business.
With regard coffee/tea making facilities, our website clearly states that these are provided on request. No such request was made at time of reservation or on arrival. I can only apologise for the lack of drinking glasses in your room. These obviously had not been replaced after cleaning.

As we are located on one of the main arterial routes into and out of the city centre of Cork, I would be seriously concerned if traffic was not flowing. The "thin" walls to which you refer are standard, double slab covered with Gypsum and contain insulation between the slabs. When one is staying in guesthouses, B&Bs, hotels and boarding houses, I feel it is to be expected that one will hear a certain amount of other peoples movements within the building.
Your suggestion that the ambience of the room is that of a boarding house is unkind. This is my home.
At EUR40 per person sharing, we are one of the least expensive in Cork.
I can only reiterate the fact that I am sorry you were not happy at Acton Lodge.
