“Brilliant!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

We spent a lovely weekend in Cork, which was even more special because of the location and hospitality of the Metropole. The hotel, staff and pool were brilliant, the room was on the small size, and a bit noisy by the road, but we hope to return one day (with ear plugs). Breakfast was limited but available until 12 noon which was great after a late night. The staff were all lovely, friendly and very helpful.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the river are quieter, pay extra to have larger room

“great staff and location”

I stayed in the metropole for two nights over thr new year wityh my boyfriend.I asked the night before i arrived if i could check in early and they said they would do their best to accomodate me.On arrival they ahd the room ready for me at 11am as I was getting ready for a wedding which was really helpful!
nice late weekend breakfast to 12pm which was great following a wedding the day before!
i didnt use the bar but all the staff were lovely, nice comfy accomdation, not luxurious but clean and cosy.rooms were quite warm,we had to open the windows but that was fine, not a complaint. To use the car park, you have to pull into the loading bay outside the hotel, quickly run into receptiona dn get a pass for the public car park which is around the corner,I did find this a little stressful as i dont know cork city and the one way streets but found it none the less and will know for future.I would recommend this hotel to others and would stay again if i had to stay in cork city for another event.Very close to walk into the shops and restaurants also so location is ideal!

“weekend shopping break”

i always stay at the metropole in cork we come down at least twice a year and just relax do a bit of 'shopping' lol which usually involves about an hour of shopping and then stop off somewhere nice an cosy for a pint:) it's a great hotel very central has parking which in the city is a bonus the staff are excellent..have tried jury's inn and the river lee hotel but always come back to the gresham as it's a much more cosy atmosphere...when booking we always request a room facing onto mccurtain street as they are smaller rooms but much cosier feel..some lovely bars near and around the hotel dan lowery's next door and the shelbourne a few door's down and brannigan's about 5 mins walk is always lively and welcoming..woukld recommend this hotel for romantic getaway's and girlie shopping trip's big thumb's up will be back in february hopefully

Room Tip: rooms facing mc curtain street are cosier warmer rooms

“Overnight stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

My daughter & I stayed here last night - we had a good experience. We arrived yesterday earlier than the hotels check in time of 3pm & our room was ready for us. I had requested a quiet room & we were given a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the river Lee. The heating was on & the room clean. The room was not as spacious as the Gresham in Dublin but was adequate. The receptionist greeted us on arrival & was very chatty. We were so comfortable & cosy we slept in this morning & arrived late for the 10.30am end of breakfast. However, this was no problem & the staff even made extra rashers etc for us. Had all the usual choice of cereals, fruits, juices & fry up. We found all the staff including the housemaid very friendly. 3* would be the correct category as the hotel is a bit worn looking in places. We would stay here again - it was good value for money, friendly & the city is on your doorstep. The parking was only €7.50 for 2 days & is mentioned on the website so not too expensive. Cork is a fab city just a shame we didnt have more time to spare!

“Disappointed by Christmas party experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

I did not stay overnight at the Gresham but attended a Christmas party there and was quite disappointed by the experience. There was a nice festive atmosphere in the lobby for the mulled wine reception but we were quite a long time waiting to be called for dinner. Our party was split into two separate tables which was not what we had expected. There were only 2 menus on the table for 7 people and waiting staff appeared before we had even settled into our seats to take our orders. The meal itself was not great, I would go so far as to say that the soup was terrible(tasted very much like cheap packet soup). The salmon was tasteless. However, some of our party had the turkey and ham which was quite nice. There was a long delay between the starter and main course. The waiting staff were pleasant but seemed under pressure. One of the bar staff had an extremely poor manner. The highlight of the night was definitely the music. The band were quite good and the dj played a good selection of music. All in all I don't think that the night was worth €45.
