I wanted a cheap 'n' cheerful stay for a night before a Christmas shopping blitz of Cork city. My partner had stayed in the nearby Cork International Airport hotel and wasn't unduly impressed so I thought I would try out their nearest neighbour. At 69 euro bed-ony, I was second cheapest in the city - the Travelodge would have been 10 or 20 euro less but I thought the Radisson brand might be worth the extra. The car park barrier was broken so I didn't have to pay the €4.50 overnight charge which I think is ridiculous anyway, given it's an industrial site and no need to be charging. A lovely helpful man checked me in and I said I would ring down later to confirm times of buses from the airport to the city. My room was clean, comfortable, a tiny bit chilly but the decor, while not very exciting, was recently enough updated. It's a kind of gaudy blue wall with while adjoining walls, but there was a nice desk and office seat, with free web access. The small telly was dated but all enough channels and good reception. The shower was good pressure, and hot. Towels clean and fluffy, more in wardrobe. The only thing missing in the entire set-up was a toilet brush, which may prove important if you are sharing a room!
When I rang down for the bus times, the shift had changed and the lady wasn't as helpful as her colleague. It would be another half hour for a bus so I decided to get a taxi. I ordered from her in the lobby but 20 mins later I was still waiting. When I asked her to check she was quite abrupt and said it wasn't long since she had ordered it. Being familiar with Cork, I knew it would have taken about half that time to drive from the city to the airport. But I don't know why they don't have a link with the taxis at the airport terminal which is only 2 mins up the road, rather than ringing a company in the city centre - it doesn't make sense.
Anyway, a very relaxing night's sleep was had, the rooms seem pretty sound proofed. the bed was comfy and white linen clean. The lady on check out the next morning was very nice so all was redeemed! However, a Radisson standard hotel this does not seem to be. But for a cheapish overnight with minimum fuss but not a lot of personality, it's certainly worth a look.
Room Tip: There is no great view from any part of this hotel - unless you like airport terminals, which, bizar...
