“This Hotel has closed down”

We were booked to stay at this hotel from 09/02/2011 till 12/02/2011 with Flexibletrips a part of the Thomas Cook Org. We received an e mail from them on 08/02/2011 to inform us that we were being moved to the Gresham Metropole ( A brilliant hotel ). It transpires that the Victoria has closed down as was obvious when we went to have a look on our trip

“Nestled in the bottleneck of the city - like any cork should be”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2010

Stunning location, right in city centre, a short walk to the famous Cork food market and cozy little alley-ways leading to other shopping and pubs - close to the bus and train stations. The accommodations and pub/restaurant in the hotel were quaint rather than luxurious. The staff was friendly and helpful - the restaurant server was a prime example a typical Irish humor and the gift of gab. In the right frame of mind, some of the negatives can be found charming - like the low tables in the restaurant, the unmatching chairs and tables, and a slightly sparse menu, which does, however, include the typical Irish fare, like Irish stew and fish and chips. The nice thing about this hotel is the prime location. If you are a guitar history buff, it is short to a memorial to Rory Gallagher, Ireland's most famous rock lead guitarist. It's in a nice little courtyard lined with cobblestone streets and lots of stores and eateries.

“broken, broken, broken”

We only decided to stay in the City Centre because of the snow making driving difficult after a night out. I didn't have high expectations from this 2* hotel but even then I was really disappointed. The first room they gave us smelled like it had not had any fresh air in 20 years, the second was filthy (every piece of furniture in the room was broken, the bulbs had blown and there was no hot water). Breakfast was really basic without any fruit or diary. The eggs we chose were overcooked in a microwave. I woke up with an eye infection and rash on my legs. It was difficult to find staff. if I were to stay in the city again for the same price I could have stayed in Jurys.

“The service makes this place special”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2010

My wife and I just returned from our first trip in Ireland, and we stayed at the Victoria Hotel for one night while touring Cork. I agree with most of the other reviews; the hotel has a lot of character, but could use a little updating. That being said, the location is perfect, within walking distance to all of Cork's attractions and the bus stop. It is close to all the pubs, which is convenient, but be warned that you might hear a drunk singing "Piano Man" at 4 in the morning. Hot breakfast is included with the room and is solid.

What makes this hotel special, though, is the service. Ursela, who works at the front desk, was extremely helpful and answered all of our questions. She also let us leave our luggage in the hotel after we checked out so that we could tour Blarney Castle (a 25 min. bus ride away). Also, Chris is a character. We had a delightful evening chatting with him in the bar, and he gave us great, humorous advice for touring Ireland. His wit alone is worth the stay. All of the staff are very honest and helpful. We noticed the owner, Monica, walking around and making sure the guests had what they needed.

Overall, this is a historic old hotel in a great location with great service. If you want to stay in the heart of Cork and don't need any frills, I would definitely recommend it.

“built 1820 still same carpet”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2010

This hotel is in the center of Cork and if had a load of work carried out in relation the painting and new carpets would be ok.
The carpet in the dining was the worst i have ever seen it was black with dirt as was most of the carpet in the hotel
there were no plugs in the bathroom ,the bed was very lovely and had a great nights sleep .
This could be a gem with a lot of work.
