“I'v never stayed in a Brothel before...Shocking stuff!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2011
3
people found this review helpful

Small room to fit 4 people (one on a fold out bed that resembled a dirty nappy)
White towels were marked in capital letters used permanent black marker "ASHLEY HOTEL". Sheer class!
The carpet in our room was not hoovered and there was a lot of dust in the room.
The sign on the bathroom door said "PUSH" and from the inside it said "PULL".
There was another sign in the Bathroom that said "TO DRAW HOT WATER PLEASE RUN HOT TAP IN BATH" this was worrying in itself but it was fine until there was no hot water Saturday morning and we had to have ice cold showers even after following the directions and calling reception...
We had no sign to put on the door asking not to do the beds but because we had left clothes bags and personal belongings on them we presumed our things would not be touched. When we got back the beds were made and all our things had been moved around the room...
The hotel said it was policy to take the hotel key when you were coming and going to see who was or wasn't in the hotel, I have never heard of this before and if this was the case no one should have went to clean our room because I did not give my key when we left so what was the point...
There was rat poison openly layed out in a press in the "Ironing room" which was completely dangerous, irresponsible and worrying...
The carpet in the Dinning room was damp to walk on and we only went for breakfast the first morning because none of it was edible. Eggs were so close to raw I swear I heard one cluck at me, sausage smelled putrid, bread like re-heated toast and rasher bacon microwaved within an inch of its life... on the buffet table there was 3 tesco yogurts, bowels of dodgy looking cereal, 2 bananas and an apple and milk in a dirty jug...
The view from our room at the front of the hotel was a funeral home and 2 doors down there was a strip club!
Our bed was a double bed base which they put a king size mattress on top of so we couldn't sit on the edges of the bed or move to close to it while sleeping without falling...
The radiator in the room didn't work, to compensate for this we had ridiculous amounts of blankets, sheets and duvets on the beds.
Lock on the door wasn't very assuring so we had to push one of the beds against the door at night.
Very over priced for what you get and more so resembles a bad B&B than a hotel. How they have a 3 star rating is beyond me given the state of the place.
Also be warned that every taxi man to pick us up and drop us off warned us to be careful and to move hotels if possible because The Ashley Hotel was known as a brothel around the city. Two taxi drivers said they thought it had closed down because they never hear of anyone staying there......
It more than lives up to its reputation!

Thank you for your review. We are disappointed that it expresses such negative views of our City Centre hotel which our family have operated with great care since 1963. Following your review, we have carefully examined each aspect of it and here is our reply.

Originally there were two twin rooms booked for four people but on your arrival we were informed that you changed your mind and wanted to share one bedroom between 4 people, one guest was cancelling and was not arriving until the next day.

We offered a bedroom with a double and single bed which you agreed. The maximum occupancy in this bedroom was for 3 people, but you asked us to facilate the fourth guest. Again, the two twin rooms were booked but you insisted on taking an alternative bedroom even though we told you it would be too small for four people and you insisted in cramming your fourth friend into it. In fact we kept the second bedroom just in case you changed you mind when you fourth friend arrived the next day.

The front desk staff member telephoned you immediately when you went into the room and on a couple of occasions on both days other staff members when they met you, asked if everything was to your satisfaction and every time we were answered that everything was perfect.

We do not ignore the maintenance and cleanliness of the hotel, hence we tried to service your bedroom.
The staff member who cleaned your bedroom informed us about the state of the room which was in a terrible condition, and there was also plenty of alcohol in the room, which is not acceptable. No staff members was informed that the Do Not Disturb sign for the door was missing and no staff member was informed not to enter or clean your bedroom. The situation repeated the next morning and again no staff member was informed that you did not want your room to be serviced.

The photo of the visible bait was taken in the mapped and monitored designated bait point area, which is mandatory by law I enclose the following:-.

Bord Bia and HACCP require Bait Record and Site Map
8.7.1. Bait record and site map must be available, maintained and up to date.
Bait records with locations must be maintained up to date and be made available
for inspection.

In relation to the breakfast, please be acknowledged that at the same time there were other customers and we did not receive any complaints about the quality of food. A staff member that was on duty informed us that on that morning your party came to the dining room wearing pyjamas and bare feet. This was very disrespectful toward the other guests and staff.

On check in you were informed of our house rule to submit your bedroom key at reception and not to remove it from the Hotel for security reason and you acknowledged this fact and agreed. A card with your room number was given to each of your colleagues on check in, which you were advised can be present at any time to obtain the bedroom key. There are notices to this matter in all bedroom folders and throughout the house.

On the morning of your departure the assistant Manager met one guest who left before the rest of your party. She asked if she enjoyed her stay and to which she replied yes with a smile and said thank you for everything and then she left.
About fifteen minutes later the remainder of your party checked out late with lots of shopping bags again they were asked the same question by the assistant Manager to which you all replied yes, and talked about all the great shopping that they had bought and the excellent weekend you all had.
The Assistant Manager was asked to call them a taxi for your party and you went outside to have a cigarette and wait for their taxi which arrived ten minutes later. You came back in to say goodbye to her and went on their journey.

For the entire weekend several members of staff including the Manager enquired about your stay as we do with all our guests and on no occasion was any complaint brought to any staff members attention.
So when we saw your review, we were amazed as to the complete opposite stance you took.

“Stay at the Ashley and you'll never want to stay anwhere else!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 March 2011

Whenever I visit Cork City I always stay at the Ashley Hotel.

This family run hotel is perfectly placed in a central location yet you don't have to pay through the nose for this privilege as you would with hotel chains.

The rooms are comfortable, the food is great and the staff are extremely welcoming and friendly - when I'm there I feel like a friend who is staying over rather than a guest, their hospitality really knows no bounds!

For those travelling my car or bike there is a secure car park, they cater for those travelling with pets and reception is always manned.

What else could you possibly need? I wouldn't stay anywhere else!

the rooms were homely and the bathrooms clean it was like a home away from home.
i would stay there again as i thought the staff were excellent making sure i was comfortable and always smiling whenever i asked them directions or advice on where to eat etc.

“The hotel from hell”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2010

I travelled from Dublin to Cork on business and found this hotel online beforehand. All I can say is that what you get is not what you see online. From the moment i stepped inside this motel i felt sick to the stomach. Firstly, I was greeted with a stale smell and a woman with Attitude at the front desk. All I wanted to do was get to my room but she insisted on suggesting how i should fill my time over the next two days when i didn't want or need this information. Eventually when i got to my room it was damp, smelly, dirty and had rat poison under the bed. When i mentioned this to the manageress she informed me that the rat poison was a 'precautionary measure'. The bathroom was old and mouldy and the towels had 'ashley hotel' written on them in permanent marker. After a very uncomfortable nights sleep on a lumpy, springy matress i made my way down to breakfast and was served up a plate of greasy, cold food. This, i thought, was the last straw. I went on the internet and found that for eu.40 more per night i could stay in a plush 5 star spa resort and golf club outside the city. I checked out and decided to book myself into this 5 star hotel and had a great experience. The Ashley was less than basic and it was obvious not a cent had been spent on its upkeep or maintenance. The only thing it had going for it was its location, and even though when i changed hotels I was a good bit outside the city, a staff member insisted on driving me in the hotel's courtesy car to my meetings when i inquired about taxis. I could not believe the service i received. All i can say about the Ashley is that I was disgusted with my entire stay and won't be making a return visit.
