“What a disaster”

I always say that I'll write a hotel review after a stay but I never seem to get around to it, however my boyfriend and I were so diasappointed with this hotel I just had to warn other people about it!!
Where do I begin!
We were greeted with a lovely foyer (don't be fooled). We were booked in for a saturday and sunday night (a christmas present we received). This hotel needs a major revamp...asap! Long narrow corridors with dirty carpets, lopsided signs on doors, the smell of smoke throughout the corridors and an elevator we were afraid to take a second time!
We were expecting a double room but got a very cramped triple room..musty smelling, cold during the eveing and suffocatingly warm at night (we had to leave windows open for the night..it was january!). There was an ancient maybe 16inch tv sitting on the desk with no remote and a few fairly fuzzy channels, a grungy looking carpet, little holes and dents in the walls, no iron and the "tea/coffee making facilities" consisted of a dirty kettle and a dusty tray of cups tucked away in a press under the desk. The bathtub was filthy, as were windowsills. Plus the doors were so light we couldn't get a wink at night with the noise on the corridor.we actually left the tv on low volume for the 2 nights to try and drown out the noise!!
We went into the restaurant (Quills) and soon after sitting I could notice a few tables around the room looking quite impatient. The prices were crazy considering the service and the atmosphere...17 euro for a burger, 16 euro for a mixed grill...no daily specials. We were sitting for 35 minutes before we got our salad starters! Food was tasty enough but not one of the dishes came out as described..ie burger had no egg, steak was med rare rather than med well, chicken ceasar salad had no chicken and no ceasar dressing..a garlic dressing, rocket, spinach, red lettuce, cheddar cheese and hot rashers instead...I kid you not!! Plates piled up on tables...ok enough of that.
The first night we couldn't even go into the bar because there was a social on which crowded out the bar and foyer, on our second night we got into the bar a few in there but we got the feeling that if you weren't over 60 and you weren't in there every wekend..you weren't welcome!
Icing on the cake the girl at reception tried to charge us for drinks "that had been charged to the room via room service"...we didn't even know they had room service.
All in all a real dump of a place from what we saw, maybe the pool was nice..we didn't bother. Staff not overly friendly and another thing that crossed my mind...theres no way this hotel could meet fire/health and safety regulations..all glass/wood windows and doors, ancient carpets and cardboard doors!
Steer clear of this place!!!

Dear Guest,
Thank you for providing us with detailed feedback of your recent visit to the West County Hotel and please accept our apologies to you both for the obvious disappointment with your stay.
We are disappointed that you encountered a number of deficiencies during your stay and also regret that we did not have the opportunity to rectify any of the many issues you have raised. In the absence of some specific details regarding your stay such as dates, room numbers etc it is impossible to definitively investigate the matters raised.
With regard to your dining experience I must assume that Quills is an error as we do not serve the dishes you describe in that outlet – perhaps it is the Grill Room? Nevertheless the inaccuracy of the dishes served is really most unusual and we will certainly monitor this development.
We hosted a number of Dinner dances in January and depending on the numbers attending, this can put some pressure on the bar space – but never such that you cannot access the bar and in most cases the bar space would be restored again no later than 9pm as the guests would have made their way to the banqueting room. I am of course curious to establish what evening and what time you were unable to go into the bar in order that I can investigate the matter fully.
Please accept our apologies for the Room Service drinks charge which was dealt with on check out.
Please be assured that this hotel is fully compliant with all ‘fire/health and safety regulations’
Finally, I appreciate that you clearly did not enjoy your stay with us which we greatly regret and hope that you might reconsider visiting the hotel again in the future by accepting one night's accommodation and dinner for two guests complimentary. In the meantime, thank you once again for your detailed feedback which we will use in an effort to rid ourselves of any similar reoccurrences.

Sincerely,
Brian Harrington

“Disappointing!”

We booked in for a couple of nights after seeing the hotel online, let's just say the pictures certainly didn't match the reality! Staff were indeed nice and friendly but the hotel itself overall just looks old, outdated and in a generally poor condition overall. Our room firstly smelled extremely musty or else someone had been smoking in it. The ceiling had cracks in it which were noticeable, the bathroom was grubby and had a badly stained water tap. The tv aerial wasn't plugged in and when we did put in the tv picture was very poor. One of bedside lamps was missing a bulb and there was hairs and dirt in the bathroom. There was also mildew on the window net curtain! The beds were fine in general. At night I literally heard the person in the room next door using his/her toilet which was of course most unpleasant! our room was also overlooking the carpark and we had to put up with the sound of engines, doors opening and closing an people shuffling out late at night etc. At dinner the wine glasses were visibly marked and smudged as was my cutlery.
All in all the above took a lot of the enjoyment away from our stay at this hotel. We agreed we would not stay here again. Perhaps there are much nicer rooms in quiter areas but for me this hotel needs a LOT of improvements and renovation.
All in all a big letdown and the cons far outweigh the pros.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time and effort to provide us with your valuable feedback concerning your recent stay with us.
Firstly please accept my sincere apologies to you and your partner for the poor accommodations which you experienced. We are obviously disappointed, as we believe that we have made considerable improvements to many of our procedures to ensure that our standards are maintained at a high level. The hotel has 152 guestrooms some of which were added at different times. Nevertheless, we place a big emphasis on the cleanliness and presentation of our guestrooms which we will of course continue.
Clearly on this occasion we failed to deliver in certain areas which I assure you we have already tackled in an effort to ensure we avoid a similar reoccurrence
As I am unaware of the specific detail of your stay such as the date or the particular room you stayed in I can only assume that you were allocated a room towards the front of the hotel which may also have coincided with a particularly busy night, resulting in considerable activity outside. Please do feel free to contact me directly should you wish to advise us of some particular details which will help us to pinpoint the cause of such an experience. In the meantime, we will endeavour to continue to work towards ensuring such experiences are not allowed to continue at the hotel.
Once again thank you for bringing the matter to our attention which I assure you is invaluable to us and please do accept our sincere apologies to you for the disappointment caused.

“Was treated very poorly by a member of staff”

Children running up and down corridor playing loudly til early hours of the night. I had put the "do not disturb" sign on the outside of the door however a member of staff opened the bedroom door, threw the sign into the bedroom and declared "check out is in 30 mins". Have never experienced anything like this before in a hotel, was disgusted to say the least. Will never stay here again.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time and effort to provide us with your valuable feedback concerning your recent stay with us.
Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience and disturbance caused to you as a result of noise on the corridors. During school holiday periods particularly, we may have children staying with their families in the hotel and despite a whole host of activities being available for children’s entertainment sometimes they feel the urge to ‘take on’ the corridor. It is obviously a rare incident but none the less one that is most unwelcome. We will keep a close eye on this matter to try and prevent a similar reoccurrence.
We are very disappointed to learn that an accommodation assistant at the hotel would cross a ‘Do not Disturb’ sign and declare that check out is in 30 minutes. If you could give me some further details regarding your stay I can investigate it further. In the meantime, I assure you that all personnel have been reminded of the proper procedure in such instances.
Once again please accept our apologies for the disappointment caused and our thanks to you for bringing the matter to our attention.

“Fantastic value at a cosy hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

Stayed for a weekend with friends in October. Got the room for dirt cheap so wasn't expecting much but was very pleasantly surprised. Room was a good size, beds were so comfy and bathroom was bright and clean. One light in the room was flickering when we arrived but one of the staff immediately fixed it and was so friendly and helpful.

Had a lovely meal in the bar on the Friday night and felt comfortable and relaxed enough to stay in the hotel bar all evening.

Went for a swim on the Saturday, the leisure centre was lovely and very clean. Reception staff were very helpful, sending anything we required up to the room and booking taxis for us etc. Really had a lovely stay at this cosy, clean and relaxed hotel.

“Not Happy”

Stayed in the West County Hotel on the 27th December to see a gig - The Saw Doctors.Intially the hotel was fine, i didnt expect to much luxury as it is a three star hotel. We checked in, went to our room which was basic but again it was fine (could do with a lick of paint though). Tv reception slightly fuzzy. The fire alarm went off so we made our way down to the reception (it was a false alarm-this to was ok as these things happen, id rather the alarm be working then not!) we went down to the bar to have some food, it was nice, good portions. We the went to the gig. after the gig we we decided we were hungry so we went to the room to get room service as i had read in the welcome pack sandwiches and light snacks are available 24/7, when we called down we were told there was no room service as the hotel was busy (is that not the idea for a hotel?) we decided to go down to reception and get a takeaway number so we could have it delivered (bare in mind we havent ate since 7 that evening) we were told by reception they had no numbers for take aways in the town and no effort was made to get them. we explained our situation, asked them was there any chance of there being any food on the premises, we were told there was vending machines on the floors. we decided this was better than nothing and made our way to the machines. the vending machine on the first floor was broken, and on the second floor theyre were several other disgrunted customers at the vending machine trying to get something to eat, it was a joke! eventually we managed to get meanies and a moro (please note neither of us are drubk-at all!) when we got back to our room we went to bed- not very happy! throughout the night there was unbelievable noise (the walls are v thin) the radiator in our room was banging off the wall all night (no aircondioning heating system controller) the room was boiling! we opened the window but it made NO difference, a sauna!, so very little sleep was got. check out is 11am (v early) we went down to breakfast the following morning which was lovely, everything was fresh. when we returned to our room (before the checkout time) our key card wouldnt let us in, made our way down to reception (queues) then we found a cleaner to let us in, she said they must of automatically shut our key card off. at the check out i voiced my issues to the receptionist, she apologised and told me she would get a manager to contact me alas i heard nothing at all and its now over two weeks on. i think my concerns were given little weight as i am a very young looking 26 yr old, i thnk an older couple would of gotten their concerns addressed at check out. i was very disappointed with my stay especially as we spent alot of money on tickets, room, food and bar. it was also apart of a xmas present (Turns out it wasnt a good one) I Would not recommend people to stay if its a busy night/period as they cannot cater for large crowds. i'd say its fone on quieter nights. i am sorry to leave a negative review as i never usually would but i feel i was left with no choice.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time and effort to provide us with your valuable feedback concerning your recent stay with us.
Firstly please accept my sincere apologies to you that your complaint was dealt with as promised. With regard to your feedback, we are very disappointed to learn of the difficulties you encountered as a guest at the hotel. We do serve snacks throughout the night and we do keep contact numbers for local restaurants – I am sorry that these simple requests were not dealt with in the appropriate manner. Rest assured however that we have taken the necessary action to prevent a similar reoccurrence.
The hotel is well accustomed to catering for large events and so the excuse of it being too busy is simply unacceptable. With regard to the central heating in the room this is controlled by both time clocks and by the radiator valve in the room. At the very least an adjustment of the radiator valve would have greatly reduced the heat within the room.
We would dearly welcome the opportunity to make some amends to you for the unacceptable service you received and perhaps you would contact us directly at the hotel in order that we could arrange to do so.
Once again thank you for bringing the matter to our attention which I assure you is invaluable to us and please do accept our sincere apologies to you for the disappointment caused.
Sincerely
