Stayed 2 nights. One night was a freebie because it isnt a hotel I would stay in otherwise. After reading the reviews I was nervous and it was a mixed bag. The bad sadly outweighs the good.
Good Points-Friendly receptionist, Nice lobby area, good sized room with nice furniture, good size bathroom, very good food in the restaurant, lovely breakfast despite the rotten cheap concentrated juice, spa treatment was excellent. Very friendly girl who did it. I had a total indulgence facial which was a real treat, heated bed and a massage included..divine.
The Bad- First the location is out of Ennis, no problen there but its not in the lovely countryside, rather its in a housing estate.Weird. We had a room on the ground floor with one window that wouldnt shut properly. The rad was switched off at night and wasnt turned on until afternoon so it was a tad chilly. No big deal but no extra blanket. There was 1 spare pillow. It was the thinest pillow ever and not even in a zip bag. The room itself was very worn and tired. There is no investment being put back into the rooms and they are by no means 4 star. They are at best a poor 3 star. The furniture is holding up well because you can see it is good quality. I have the feeling this hotel when it was built was top notch but its been ran to the ground. The soft furnishings are shabby. I work in the hospitality industry & to advertise as 4 star is very misleading. There was no safe in the room, no minibar, the towels were tiny and cheap and smelt musty. The bath products were cheap. The towel rail in the room didnt work and had exposed wires. The bath area had mildew on the tiles and water marks on the shower rail. There was no welcome book just a cheap laminate menu for the restaurant. There was no do not disturb sign, no breakfast order menu, the tv was old and had a poor reception on most channels. The biggest complaint i have is that the staff we encountered in the bar and restaurant were unreal. My husband and i entered spikes bar and took a seat & despite the staff falling over themselves with nothing to do they ignored us for a good ten minutes and stood chatting to what i assume were locals. Finally my husband approached the bar and asked an older Irish gentleman for a food menu to which he replied "theyre over there" and nodded at the other end of the bar and promptly turned his back and walked away. We walked out after this, not that they noticed or cared. This was not an isolated incident. The foreign guy in the restaurant seemed friendly when we were in the restaurant but the next night ignored us straight out when we smiled at him in the lobby. My husband had a few drinks in the golf club & was also made to feel very uncomfortable like he was intruding on a secret society. Also when he drank in Spikes bar again the next night the staff ignored him in favour of watching x factor. So while hes sitting waiting in his chair the 3 - 4 staff on duty chat together & he eventually just goes up to the bar to order instead. Unreal. We have never encountered this before. Where is the manager?? How can people in the hospitaity industry behave this way? we spoke to another guest and he also agreed unless you are a local the older irish bar man has no time for you.The attitude must seep down to the younger staff. The staff need training or replacing. The place seems overstaffed with poorly trained people with nothing much to do. We were happy to leave. Thank god it was a good rate. Id feel cheated if I paid more than €70 for a room here.
