“Birthday treat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

My partner brought me here for a birthday surprise and I was not disappointed. The room rate includes a half bottle of champagne, which is a nice touch. The room was warm and clean, and even the proximity to the road didn't bother us as it is well glazed.
The bathroom is generously proportioned with an excellent and powerful shower separate to the bath.
It is a restaurant with rooms, so no room service or some of what you might expect from a hotel. And although I didn't see the bill, my partner assured me he felt it was good value. The breakfast the next morning was freshly cooked and with well sourced ingredients.
We ate in the restaurant and we both enjoyed the meal. It is not cheap, I would agree, but the produce is high quality and the service efficient and friendly. We discussed wine options with the sommelier and he recommended a fine bottle of an Argentinian blend at a reasonable price. The seafood and meats were excellent - my oysters were some of the best I have had and my partner's home-smoked cod with butter sauce was delicately flavoured and perfectly cooked. We shared a roast rib cooked rare, which was carved at the table. They clearly have some impressive kit in the kitchen, as it was marinaded (soy or kecap manis?) and caramelised to a deep colour, while rare inside. The chips are good; our only gripe was with the salads, which were overdressed and not up to standard.
Overall, be prepared to pay for good food in a wonderful dining room.

“Fabulous little hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

A cross between a hotel and a B&B, so don't expect a gym or swimming pool, but whatever it actually is classified as, the service, rooms, and friendly staff make it a great place to stay if you are in the vicinity, and I will definitely stay here again next time I need to be in Linlithgow.

Very good sized room with good storage, huge bathroom with separate shower cubicle, free wi-fi, tea and coffee / kettle, great cooked to order breakfast (you could really stock up for the day and skip lunch if you stocked up on this).

There are two on site restaurants (one of which is a little bit pricy, but very good quality, and mostly steak based, the other is *very* pricy and I didn't use, there are separate entries in TA for full reviews of these), otherwise for other places to eat, the town of Linlithgow is 5+ minutes up the road.

Unfortunately its a little too far out of Edinburgh to make a good base for exploring the city, but a day trip is feasible, you just wouldn't want to commute every day.

“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2011

Took my girlfriend for a birthday celebration with Dinner, Bed & Breakfast. It was fantastic.

It is important to realise that this is a Restaurant with Rooms, not a hotel. Therefore it is not a place with room service, 24hr reception or other hotel standards.

That said, the room was large and given it was the coldest day of the year welcomingly warm (toasty in fact!) with a large clean bathroom with the most remarkable separate power shower that I have ever experienced. It literally took my breath away.

The bed is actually two small double beds pushed together so if you are a person who like to sleep dead centre of a bed this may vex you but I didn't feel it whilst sleeping.

The TV had Freeview so my addiction to 24hr News was well catered for and the wifi signal in my room was strong.

The dinner was marvellous in the award winning restaurant. The wine was divine. The Maître d' took it as a challenge to find me a white wine that I could drink without puckering my cheeks and he was successful. Breakfast was custom made to order and was sufficient to keep me from needing a large meal for the rest of the day.

For a couples night away, a long journey rest stop or even a business travellers regional base for a day or 2 I would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: If you are a sleeper that strops about hearing a feather drop in a field a mile away phone ahead and...

“Nice Inn Close to Edinburgh”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

Stayed here four nights and had a very pleasant experience. The room was large with a comfortable king size bed, the bathroom was also large with a shower and a tub. More importantly, the room and inn were very clean. When we arrived there was a half bottle of Champagne on ice, which is a nice touch and every day after they supplied the room with two small scotch and two small gin, again a nice touch. Their full English breakfast was much better than normal and was cooked to ones request. The staff were extremly polite and helpful. I did eat at the Chop and Ale and found the food fine, but nothing special. Again, I was more concerned with my accommodation than I was the restaurants.

“Food & wine good, everything else could do better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011 via mobile

Our stay was to celebrate my husbands birthday. Our room was nicely located towards the back of the hotel. The champagne which I had prearranged to have on arrival was nicely chilled. However, we were somewhat surprised to learn that the 'cocktail bar' 'in' the restaurant did not in fact serve cocktails!! Our meal from the quick supper menu was very good with an excellent red wine. Service attentive but not intrusive. The following morning however were a little disappointed to see an extremely limited breakfast menu, although admittedly was delicious. Finally the bill on checking out was very confusing with the service charge was mentioned discreetly amounting to a sizeable sum. To summarise, whilst the meal was good value the rest of our stay not so.. We won't be returning
