“Excellent hostel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

We had a lovely 2 night stay. We had our own room for 2. Very pleasant manager and guests. Comfortable, very well equipped kitchen and many food basics from prior guests. Some reviewers had complained about cold showers--we had lots of very hot water. I suspect others did not understand the peculiar operation of British showers. Also others complained about the long distance of the hostel from the village. We took the local "taxi" from the ferry, to get us settled, then explored the area near the hostel, Not a long walk to the Abbey or good meals at St. Columba Hotel.

“Incredible views! Fantastic value for money.”

My three day stay at Iona Hostel was fantastic. I have never stayed in a hostel before, and wasn't too eager too but this place is truly special. It is the most remote place on the island but is such a pleasant walk, takes about 10 mins to get to the Abbey and all other attractions, maximum 20 mins walk to the Harbour. The Ilse of Iona is so quaint, it's well worth a visit.

The Hostel has the most beautiful views, and sitting in the communal lounge area you can enjoy the great views of the expansive fields as they stretch to the ocean. It is very clean and the rooms were perfect, with views from the rooms too! The room we had slept 4 people, with two bunk beds. If you like privacy make sure you book the whole room to yourselves, otherwise if there are only 3 of you, you will be sharing with someone else.
Such a beautiful place to stay, and at an absolute steal!

Room Tip: Request a room with a view of the sea.

“Great stay, perfect price, awesome sheep!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2011 via mobile

Great hostel experience, just a short walk to the beach, and close to Dun I, the hiking destination. The staff was delightful, especially the young Scottish gentleman working there who alerted us to a black sheep named Shorn Connery, who thinks it's a dog. Take some cookies and you will have a terrific afternoon.
The one caveat is that the hostel is 2 km from the ferry. Take the taxi, especially if you have luggage.

“Lovely hostel shame about person running it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

The hostel is a fair walk from the ferry but on the door step is the most beautiful beach.

Very good facilities and clean.

Surprised to see this hostel is still using sleeping sheets when most others are using fitted sheets.

Found the person running the hostel had a bit of a attitude problem and the owner would do well to keep more of an eye on things.Sacrcastic remarks and ignoring you were the order of the day.

“Beautiful location, good facility, great staff”

I stayed for 3 days last month. The location is absolutely stunning, with ocean view and quick access to the beaches. The staff was really helpful. The facility is clean, everyone has to remove their shoes in the entry area. Given that Iona has sheep roaming everywhere, and leaving their droppings, this is a terrific policy. Food - The kitchen is big with double sink, stove and lots of pots and utensils. The food and refrigerator is well organized. There's community space in the kitchen area that has books and I believe, some toys. It had a nice, homey atmosphere. There's a Drying Room, which given how much it rains there, was a godsend. For a fee, laundry is available. There was a nice spirit there. I really liked the other guests, of course that will vary. I had my bike, which got me around the island quickly. Otherwise, be prepared to walk about 10 minutes to the Abbey and 15 to town for groceries and the ferry. There is a taxi service on Iona, a lot of people use it to get their stuff to their accommodations for 5 pounds. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Reserve early if possible.
