“Hard To Find Fault”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

A group of friends used this hotel when going to a wedding in it's sister hotel The Brig O' Doon as it was fully booked. It would have to be the most picky of person who could find fault with this hotel, on arrival the grounds are well cared for and our first impression was backed up by our welcome from it's staff. All of our party were impressed with the size cleanliness and comfort of our rooms. The communal areas lounges and bar were all very welcoming and gave the impression of owneners who cared about their custom. The sister hotel we had the wedding at also gave this impression. When we returned that evening we had drinks in the bar and the night porter could'nt do enough for us. The breakfast the next morning was excellant quality and I defy anyone to say the were hungry after it. The hotel is a 5 minute walk to the beach for anyone who wants a walk along the front and is a short taxi ride to the town centre or for a trip to the Robert Burns museum. Ayr and Ayrshire has many interesting places to visit including Culzean Castle a National Trust property. Would I have any complaints ? No certainly not about this hotel but on walking out to the beach we did notice that there was quite a bit of dog fouling, not a problem the hotel was at fault about but I am sure if they read this they will complain to the local council. At £80 for Bed and Breakfast for 2 in a 4 star hotel we found this hotel offered excellant value.

“Excellent Food and Atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

I visited Ellisland for dinner for a family celebration. As it was the week before christmas our booking was for an early time of 5.30pm. Due to the early time we were the only diners in the restaurant, however, did not feel self conscious with the staff being attentive whilst not being over the top.

The food was delicious, I had the chicken tempura which was different to tempura I have had elsewhere having a slight curry taste, my main of lasagne was also delicious. We had a varied selection from the menu and all were lovely.

I had originally chosen the slow braised beef for my main course, when I ordered it the waiter asked if I knew it was a fairly hot curry, I hadn't and was grateful for this being drawn to my attention as the menu mentioned spicy ingredients but I hadn't realised it would be hot which isn't to my taste. This was much appreciated and is an example of the good service we received.

The hotel itself was very tastefully decorated and was in keeping with the original style of the house - and it was absolutely spotless, which is a common feature of all Costely establishments.

All in all it was a lovely evening and brilliant meal - I would thoroughly recommend Ellisland

“Clean, comfortable, welcoming house hotel offering great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

I stayed here for 2 nights in December 2011, my second visit to the Ellisland and the experience was similar on both occasions and very enjoyable. The house is beautiful with wood panelling in the dining area, open (gas) fires and attractive furnishings and wall art. The bedrooms are tastefully furnished with spacious en-suite facilities, some with showers only and some with showers over baths. There is a TV in every room but a small (and personal to me) point would be that slimline TVs in the rooms would be a nice enhancement.
The food is of high quality, good variety of choice (local produce used) and price affordable and in my opinion spot on for the current financial climate. The breakfast choice is ample with juice, cereal, hot food including smoked fish etc. Table service for breakfast which I enjoy. There was no porridge available on the first morning and I was slightly dissappointed that the same answer was given on the second morning especially given the simplicity of porridge making.
The staff are helpful, polite, attentive and courteous. A little gem and I highly recommend this house hotel for a nice break or even to have coffee/lunch/dinner if you are in the area.

Room Tip: Some rooms have showers over the bath and some have showers only.

“wonderful food at reasonable prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

Left Lochgreen hotel to come here and was not expecting the same quality, but if anything the staff were even more accomodating.Every member of staff had a smile to give and the restuarant staff were 1st class. Very pleasant and looked as though they even enjoyed their job! I've stayed in many a hotel where it appeared to be a trial just being there. Food was wonderful and plenty of it, I think Mr Costley must be very proud of his establishments and we are so impressed we are going to work our way around them all! Only 1 downside no elevator my husband is disabled and it was a real struggle to get up the stairs. Maybe a stairlift could be a consideration?
