“As bad as it gets!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I don't usually give a damning report on somewhere that I have stayed due to the impact it can have, but on this occasion I felt that the terrible service warrant my criticism. We arrived at the hotel for a 2 night stay and were checked inn by the girl at the front desk who was not to charming, not the first impression that you are looking for. We went to our room, which was nice, clean and comfortable. Only fault with the room was trying to control the temprature in the shower, was impossible. We went to the hotel bar and restaurant area for some food and a quite drink. First thing we noticed was plates sitting with un-eaten food which looked like they had been there for some time. We also noticed that there was only 1 person serving for the bar and light-bites that are served in the bar area. Again not the first impression that you want. it took a while to get served at the bar due to the shortage of staff and when I eventually got service the bar man did not have a great deal of knowledge about the menu. I ordered fresh fish of the day and real chips with peas and some bread and a couple of drinks. When at the bar someone who already ordered food approached the bar man to complain that they had been waiting 30 mins for they're starter!
We got our food after 25mins, fish was good but no "real chips" only frozen chips from a freezer and no pea's or bread. Asked for the bread and received 10 mins later. I don't really blame the guy who was serving, but I do blame the management as there was cleary a shortage of staff in both the Bar and restaurant as there were also people complaining about the service in that area.
We went for breakfast the next morning to find the same service that we had received the previous night, which was just about tolerable due to the time that we had allowed for the breakfast after the dinner experience.
When we came back from the business that we had carried out during the day, we went to the health club and found all ok, nice staff and pleasant surroundings.
We decided to eat in the hotel again, purely for convenience.
Wish we hadn't, the service was a lot more trying than the previous evening.
I asked the server about the menu and asked if there were mashed potatoes that could be added to meal instead of chips, to which he replied no. I then ordered 1 meal with the intention of revising my option, during which the server seen to another guest. Once I had made up my mind I then ordered what I wanted to eat and some drinks.
45 mins later my food arrived. The 1st meal that I ordered was nowhere to be seen. I approached the server who told me that I had not ordered anything else, which I corrected him on. He was adamant that I had not and blamed me for his mix up. No apoligy, no reasoning, nothing. And when the second meal turned up guess what was on the plate, mashed potatoes!!!! Really poor service!
We decided to go for breakfast the next morning due to it being included in the price.
Again there was only 1 server, but this time the breakfast area was full of people.
What then happened was straight out of Fawlty Towers. I have never seen a breakfast area in such total chaos, it was so bad that we ended up laughing at what was happening.
Needless to say there were some people who had enough and decided to leave and complained on there exit.
Again I don't think this was the fault of the servers, but down to bad management.
I went to the desk to check out and raised a complaint to the receptionist who was really unconcerned about what we had to say.
I had read that the hotel was a little slow on service on the trip advisor site, but I could not believe how bad it was.
Take my advise, STAY AWAY if you have blood pressure problems!!!!

“Fantastic weekend break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

We stayed at the eight acres for two nights 6/7th Jan '12. My girlfriend and i and two dear friends. We seriously struggled to fault the hotel in any way. The bedrooms are absolutely spotless, the reception area, restaurant and bar and all very nicely decorated with a smart contemporary feel. Between the four of us, we ate most of the dishes on the menu and could not fault anything. They were all delicious and perfectly cooked by chef. The pool and jacuzzi area were spacious and a great way to relax after a hard days sightseeing. There was also the added bonus of a games room consisting of a pool table and a full sized snooker table. Where do you get that nowadays in a premier inn? The last thing i would say about this jewel in the north is how well run it is with such a young staff. Havi the young waiter is slightly shy but always eager to please. Lori the receptionist greeted us warmly when we arrived and could not help us enough during our stay. My highest remarks go to Terri though. The young bar manageress. Nothing was to much hassle for that girl. She was polite, entertaining and generally alot of fun. Its like a home from home. Wonderful hotel all round. Top marks!

“excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

The staff were all very attentive and accommodating..The receptionist who greeted us was very efficient as I gave the wrong name on the booking, but that was not a problem and was quickly rectified. The waiter Havi was extremely polite and proffessional.Terry the bar manager made us feel relaxed and comfortable Special thanks to Anne who gave us directions to the Cathedral and an insight into life in Elgin past present and even a glimpse of the future, she is a delightful character. My only complaint would be the actual bed we had to sleep in..perfect if you didn't feel the need for a cuddle as the gap in the middle of the joined mattresses was very pronounced, other than that a perfect stay..Dinner was delicious and although vegetarian cooked breakfast was not an option, the chef made a beautiful poached eggs on toast.

Room Tip: one without a joined mattress

“A Great Start to the New Year”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

I would start by saying that the Hotel is sorely in need of an upgrade. Having said that, the rooms were clean with room service even on New Years Day. The one thing I hate is being left with towels for two days but, this hotel gave clean towels every day. The food was stunning and the young staff on duty could not do enough for us. My friends and I had a great time and would certainly recommend the Eight Acres Hotel. We will be going back in the near future. Fantastic Chef and great Service.
