Having read all the other - mixed - reviews, I can only offer my own experience. As a guest of a small wedding party, I booked in for the night, just to have somewhere to stay before I set off home. I think this hotel is rated as 3-star so I thought I knew what to expect, being a bit of a hotel expert. I also think I got a very good price, maybe as a wedding guest, but even so...
The wedding lunch was impressive; generous, imaginative and beautifully served, with delightfully attentive and friendly staff. Once it was over, I was shown to room 8, which was compact, but with everything I could want. Clean and fresh, new furniture and furnishings, a modern shower-room with a great shower (often hard to find in the UK!) and plenty of clean, good-quality towels. Plugs for the hairdryer were related to the location of the mirror (often not the case!) and although I had to sit on the bed to see the mirror, thought had been given to that too, and it worked. I hate generic plastic soap/shampoo dispensers, but I reminded myself that this is a 3-star place, and not the Ritz. The most important thing was that the bathroom was spotless and everything worked. Bring your own soap and shampoo if these things matter to you.
The bed was extremely comfortable with extra pillows in the (tiny) wardrobe. Good lighting in both rooms, quietly tasteful decor, good information on the local area and an abundance of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and quality biscuits. My only gripe with the room was that it had a skylight window which was too high to reach to open and I couldn't find a pole to do this, nor could I close the blind. The room gets the afternoon sun and it heated up quite a lot for a couple of hours. However the bathroom window opened, and by leaving the connecting door open, it cooled down. And I could have asked someone to sort it for me, but I didn't. The room was quite small, perfectly adequate for one night, but had I been staying for longer, I would have had to have moved - my large suitcase took up a lot of floorspace.
I sat out in the courtyard that evening with a glass of wine and my book, and enjoyed the view over Inverness, before going in for dinner. After my big lunch I wasn't too hungry, which was just as well as it took ages before it arrived! However, I hadn't booked and the place was packed with local diners - always a good sign - and the staff were apologetic and kept me informed of progess. When it arrived it was delicious, again generously proportioned, and beautifully served. They have a good chef.
I slept like a log and then enjoyed a lovely breakfast of poached eggs, toast and bacon, with good coffee. The staff readily agreed to hold on to my suitcase until the evening when I was leaving, effortlessly carrying it for me to a locked room, then back again, and ordering me a taxi.
To summarise, had I been staying for longer, or with my husband, I would have had to have a bigger room, but as a single traveller, it was absolutely fine, especially for the price. The staff, including the owners, were attentive, hard-working and friendly, as Highlanders are. They fairly ran about looking after their guests. For a last-minute booking in one of the best locations in Inverness, for £50, I think I got a very good deal, and had a very enjoyable experince. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again ot to recommend it to others.
