“Lovely hotel in a lovely location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

This is a lovely, friendly hotel/Inn located in a quiet, rural area in the village of Keiss on the main road just 9 miles from John O'Groats. The hotel is ideally located on the A99 within easy driving distance from all the major attractions and towns of this far north location. Wick is only about 6 miles, John O'Groats about 9 miles, Thurso about 20 miles and Dunnet Head (most northerly point on British mainland) and Castle of Mey about 12-14 miles away.

The accommodation - was superb. We had a comfortable family "suite" comprising our main bedroom with an ensuite which had a step along its length, rather unusual, but I suspect due to the age and original design of the building. The children had their own room next to ours, but both our and their rooms could only be accessed from a small private lobby to which only we had access. This was all just beyond a large lounge on the first floor. Our rooms were well furnished with a comfortable double bed in our room, and 2 single beds in the children's room. The TV in our room was fine, but the TV in the children's room didn't work (although this stopped them watching too much). There was adequate tea/coffee supplies. The hot water to the shower was a bit temperamental and it was difficult to have a good shower. Perhaps the only recommendation I would make would be to fit an electric power shower instead of using the mains water supply and relying on it. This would hopefully moderate the temperature and make it more stable, and not cost that much to do. Apart from this, everything was great.

Breakfast - was superb. The cooked breakfast was one of the best on our holiday and was the right amount. Serve yourself cereal and make your own toast is excellent as it cuts out waste, and you can make the toast so it doesn't sit around until you're ready for it. Make as much or little as you need.

Evening Meal - was fantastic. We stayed 3 nights and never needed to eat out anywhere else as the food and menu choice were so good. The food was priced reasonably for the quality which was high on all occasions. The Onion Ring Stack starter my wife had, on 2 of the three nights was outstanding (we counted 14 Onion Rings one night), and the steak I had on another night was cooked to perfection. The childrens menu, though a little limited, was perfectly adequate and their food was also very good.

Value for money - Excellent value for 3 nights accommodation for 2 adults, and 2 children for bed, cooked breakfast, evening meal of at least 2 courses for my wife and the children, and 3 courses for me, with drinks, every night, in the height of the holiday season in August set us back a total of a tad over £450 for everything. Absolutely superb value.

Generally - this hotel is very friendly. A great atmosphere at dinner and breakfast. The childrenloved the board games in the guest lounge (especially Wobbly Chef). My wife joked that, coming from Barnet, it was refreshing to find someone who supported a football club even lower in the league tables than ours (the Landlord supporting Hereford). All in all we had a GREAT time here.

Stay there again - Most Definately, Yes, and am looking forward to returning (although I haven't told my wife yet).

Room Tip: Some rooms don't have Ensuite, but don't let this put you off. If you're young and a &qu...

“Nice room, friendly and quiet,no breakfast though!!!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2011

We stayed for 1 night at the sinclair bay hotel as part of our uk roadtrip honeymoon!!! We were very pleased when we arrived to be shown to a big room with huge ensuite bathroom and told we had been upgraded for free as the hotel was'nt very busy, very nice and appreciated. The staff that we met were all friendly and helpful. The room was huge as was the bath room with a bath and plenty of HOT water!! (Also had an overbath shower but we didnt use that.) We were a bit concerned about being over a pub on a Saturday night, and although the pub seemed very busy we could'nt hear any of the noise from our room which was great. Very comfortable huge bed. Clean and a nice room. The only bad point i am sorry to say was breakfast,or rather a lack of breakfast!!! When we checked in the lady asked what time between 8.30 and 9.30am we would like breakfast, we said 9am as we had to drive on to Blackpool that day!! We went down to the breakfast room at 8.55am and there was no one about, we sat there until 9.10am and then decided to take our luggage out to the car so we could leave as soon as we had had our breakfast, we did this and then came back into the breakfast room at about 9.15am.....still no sign of anyone so we really didnt have the time to hang around and wait so ended up leaving our room key on the reception desk and driving to the local Tescos in Wick for breakfast!!! Shame as otherwise i would have given this hotel a glowing review. I was then quite put out that they charged my card the full rate for bed and breakfast when they clearly knew they had'nt come down in time to even cook us our breakfast!!! The local area is,well to put it bluntly dead!!! John O'groats is roughly 9 miles from the hotel but once you have been there thats about it. There is the town of Wick not far but we recieved a somewhat frosty reception when we went into a pub there, which was obviously a "locals only" type place so be careful where you visit.

Thankyou for your comments we like to hear feedback good or bad otherwise how can you make things better we can only apologise to these people that the experience was not as they would have liked, We were up and around at 7am but the guest did not want breakfast till 9am so I was ironing I did pop in and out but must have missed you, and I thought that you had left without paying as the bell in reception is vey loud and felt sure I would have heard it, I can only give you my sincerest apologies for the mix up, I won't apologise for the area or the people as we love both, as do most of our guests.

“If you need a pit stop in this area with a bar, then this place is just fine.”

Clean, basic, friendly, remote. Rooms and water a little cold at first. Breakfast is great so long as you don't expect fruit and different types of milk. Bar food nice. Good beer.

“completley rubbish stay away”

Went up on work business to wick. Hotel look the part on the internet but how wrong can i be.
checked in had to wait for service. got the key to my room and the first thing i saw was it had no curtains. the window overlooked a pelican crossing. The TV could only pick up channel 4 and there was a sink that had no hot water.
The dinner was nice only highlight of the trip and the pints were good too. went for a walk round the town of keiss it was OK but i wouldn't go out of my way to stay there. The toilets and shower wasn't in the room so it was a mare when you sleep naked and need to use the toilet or shower when you had to share with other guests. The rooms ad hall way on the 2nd floor smelt like fish that went off. The beds were uncomfortable. if you like a holiday up there or a trip to John O'Gortes Stay in wick or thurso.

Thankyou for your comment although I am not quite sure where you stayed because all of our rooms have curtains, and I cannot do anything about the pelican crossing, the water does take a long time to come through (apologies ) however I have changed the mattresses and the rooms now have digi boxes so thankyou for the feedback on that, we do have en-suite rooms but are a little bit more expensive than the ones that share a bathroom both can be booked on line I have asked the booking company to make it as clear as possible what people are booking so no mares for anyone else hopefully. thankyou for helping us to improve.

“A great little find!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 April 2009

The staff were great as were all the locals we met.
The children were treated like the little people they are.
The rooms actually had proper mugs in not those silly little teacups.
The family room was the best we have stayed in. A seperate room for the boys but still behind our door.
Darts pool and lots of board games kept us all happy.
Clean if a little dated but we like that!
Breakfast was great you just choose exactly what you would like from the hot food listed. Tea coffee toast/bread juice and cereal all there for you to help yourself
The owner left the bread etc out for us on the morning we left very early so we could just make our toast ourselves. One of many little things they did that make a big difference
