This is a lovely, friendly hotel/Inn located in a quiet, rural area in the village of Keiss on the main road just 9 miles from John O'Groats. The hotel is ideally located on the A99 within easy driving distance from all the major attractions and towns of this far north location. Wick is only about 6 miles, John O'Groats about 9 miles, Thurso about 20 miles and Dunnet Head (most northerly point on British mainland) and Castle of Mey about 12-14 miles away.
The accommodation - was superb. We had a comfortable family "suite" comprising our main bedroom with an ensuite which had a step along its length, rather unusual, but I suspect due to the age and original design of the building. The children had their own room next to ours, but both our and their rooms could only be accessed from a small private lobby to which only we had access. This was all just beyond a large lounge on the first floor. Our rooms were well furnished with a comfortable double bed in our room, and 2 single beds in the children's room. The TV in our room was fine, but the TV in the children's room didn't work (although this stopped them watching too much). There was adequate tea/coffee supplies. The hot water to the shower was a bit temperamental and it was difficult to have a good shower. Perhaps the only recommendation I would make would be to fit an electric power shower instead of using the mains water supply and relying on it. This would hopefully moderate the temperature and make it more stable, and not cost that much to do. Apart from this, everything was great.
Breakfast - was superb. The cooked breakfast was one of the best on our holiday and was the right amount. Serve yourself cereal and make your own toast is excellent as it cuts out waste, and you can make the toast so it doesn't sit around until you're ready for it. Make as much or little as you need.
Evening Meal - was fantastic. We stayed 3 nights and never needed to eat out anywhere else as the food and menu choice were so good. The food was priced reasonably for the quality which was high on all occasions. The Onion Ring Stack starter my wife had, on 2 of the three nights was outstanding (we counted 14 Onion Rings one night), and the steak I had on another night was cooked to perfection. The childrens menu, though a little limited, was perfectly adequate and their food was also very good.
Value for money - Excellent value for 3 nights accommodation for 2 adults, and 2 children for bed, cooked breakfast, evening meal of at least 2 courses for my wife and the children, and 3 courses for me, with drinks, every night, in the height of the holiday season in August set us back a total of a tad over £450 for everything. Absolutely superb value.
Generally - this hotel is very friendly. A great atmosphere at dinner and breakfast. The childrenloved the board games in the guest lounge (especially Wobbly Chef). My wife joked that, coming from Barnet, it was refreshing to find someone who supported a football club even lower in the league tables than ours (the Landlord supporting Hereford). All in all we had a GREAT time here.
Stay there again - Most Definately, Yes, and am looking forward to returning (although I haven't told my wife yet).
