“A real surprise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Was far more than I would have ever expected, stayed in a double room which was more than adequate. The No.1 brasserie was fantastic. I had a great lunch which even though a bowl of soup and sandwich was great and hearty with really good ingredients. The dinner at night time was fantastic with local beef top of the menu.
Murray the owner was around and about during my whole stay and was very welcoming.
Very much an unexpected pleasure!

“Fine for a short stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

We stayed at Mackays Hotel in Wick in July 2011, it was a short stay (1 Night) and it is difficult to get a full impression from such a short stay.

On the Plus Side:

Very friendly staff, the common area decor was very nice, parking was no problem and the standard of food served was excellent.

On the minus side:

The bedroom was somewhat spartan and looked tired, whilst the food was excellent, servings were small (with the exception of the fish and chips) and in our view, overpriced.

Generally, we felt that whilst the service was friendly, the restaurant service in particular was slow. Portion size we have mentioned and will give an example. After a long drive to get there we decided to have a lunch in the hotel. I ordered the smoked haddock soup which was excellent in quality but barely enough. Jackie ordered a different dish and the same applied. At dinner that night, we were told the restaurant was very busy and were obliged to eat much earlier than we wished. We were surprised to find an empty restaurant where the friendliness of the staff was marred by the interminable wait for everything. I again ordered smoked haddock as a main course, not a soup. I was quite shock to receive, when it finally arrived, even less haddock than had been served for lunch in the soup! The meal took well over 90 mins and still there were very few diners. Why we had been obliged to eat so early still mystifies us.

Overall we had the impression that this hotel was fine for a one night stay but we were glad to be moving on.

From what we experienced it would be hard to recommend Mackays Hotel, however, Wick is a small place and options are limited. Also, even the best hotels have 'off' days and our caveat is that we only spent one night there and this review might not be reflective of Mackays Hotel at its best. We hope this is the case.

HI

So disappointed to hear you didn't enjoy your stay as much as we would have liked you to.

It is difficult to comment after so much time has passed as we cannot investigate, as I don't have a record of this I am unsure whether you mentioned this at the time of your stay.

Please email me direct on ellie@mackayshotel.co.uk as I would like to find out more so your experience does not happen again.

“Comfortable and Welcoming Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

2nd time here. Stayed on business trip as the Hospital is straight accross the road.....tip... you can stay parked outside the hotel and walk to the hospital. Very warm welcome in small but pleasant reception area. I was staying in a single room which was pretty small with traditional if not slightly old fashioned decor. Room was clean and comfortable enough with an LCD TV but found there was poor sound proofing to the room next door. Ate in the No1 restaurant within the hotel and the staff were very very pleasant..... but they should have shown me to my seat rather than point at the table and say that one there while I seated myself then waited 5 minutes for a menu. However the service after that was very good, the home soup was excellent and the fish pie was different from what I expected but still very enjoyable. Nice touch to give an Old Putney liquor 'on the house' at the end of the meal. Nice welcoming family run hotel and I would use it again.

Room Tip: If staying in upper floors note there is only a very samll 1 person lift for access.

“Lovely food but tiny portions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

I had fish and chips which was lovely and I didn't need anything else but my mum had a vegetarian quiche which was looked more like a starter than anything else. Friendly and good service.
