“Good location; excellent, helpful staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

We used this hotel as a base for going to the Castle of Mey (see photo). Beverley and Jamie, the hotel owners, were extremely friendly and helpful, and Beverley, when there were no Sunday buses to take us to the Castle of Mey, took us herself, and then picked us up when we called after visiting! That was a special case, and public buses are ordinarily available all other days, but it gives some idea of the kindness and willingness to help of the St. Clair people. They also directed us to the very interesting Caithness Horizons, an excellent local history museum. The spacious breakfast room (with free and generous cooked breakfast provided) was very pleasant, and service was courteous and attentive. The bedroom, while not large, was quite comfortable, with an excellent bathroom and shower, and with an interesting view (see photo) of the most picturesque church in town. If we go back to Thurso, we will definitely stay here again.

“Nice Hotel for a Short Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2010

Stayed at the St.Clair for 3 nights on a coach trip. The Hotel is centrally located in Thurso, which is a pleasant enough little town but there was not much going on. The room was comfortable with T.V. and tea/coffee making facilities. The food in the restaurant was good, although the fried breakfast was a bit short on quantity. Staff were pleasant and helpful. There has clearly been investment in this Hotel in recent times as evidenced by the very nice lounge bar area and it is certainly not a bad base if you are touring the surrounding area.

“Pretty average hotel”

I expected slightly more from the St Clair hotel, rooms were clean enough but pretty basic and the television was so small and high there was no point in it being there! The lights in the hotel room, particularly the bathroom were incredibly dark even when they were all on! The room was cleaned every day and teamaking facilities were provided. The hotel also has a restaurant which was very quiet but served up fantastic food (think there was also a different menu every day).

“Good base for Northern Scotland”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2008

I wanted a base for 3 days for touring the North Coast of Scotland so Thurso was an ideal base .. i stayed at the St Clair which is situated in the heart of Thurso .. It is clean & tidy although the family room that i had with my wife & daughter was a bit basic & the shower room could done with a bit of smartening up ...
However the Scottish Breakfast was filling & set us up for the day & of an evening the bar area was cosy with a choice of bar meals for about £5.00...
As i was there in August it was a bit pricey at £90 a night for the room & breakfast, there are not that many hotels in the town so they can charge quite a premium rate; go out of season & you can get it a lot cheaper ..
Thurso is a small town with very few shops & not a vast array of places to eat ... it will not take the visitor long to explore what it has to offer .. it is primarily a place to use as a base for touring.
During the summer months of June & July it doesn't get dark until 11.00 at night so you can enjoy the long days exploring the Northen Coastline .. make sure you go west as far as Durness as the scenery is spectacular & a few miles east is John O Groats where you can take the ferry across to the Orkney Islands; do this if you have time, the ferry trips & an organised coach tour of the islands will cost you about £30 .. well worth it for the experience you will gain from it.
If i return to Thurso i would stay at the hotel again .
