“Trip back to Thurso”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

We came here in July, as I was born in Thurso and was making another nostalgic trip .

Having stayed here before I expected the same high standard.
The hotel has so much character and in an excellent position, but I was very disappointed in the room. In great need of a face lift. One chair actually fell back as I sat on it as it was not safe. It was dark and unfriendly, not like the previous trip some 4 years ago wher we had a lovely room.
The breakfasts were excellent with staff who looked after you, but on leaving the receptionist did not say anything like have you had a good trip.

It is sad when you make the long trip to the North of Scotland the welcome is not as it should be.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room first, I wish I had done so. I vbelieve I was put in a room at the back as it wa...

“Needs a bit of investment”

I stayed here with colleagues this month and whilst I have no major compaints there were a few niggles. Booking in was easy and the staff were very friendly. My room (Number 2) was a bit on the small side even as a single and could have done with redecoration.

The meal at night was fine and pretty good value. Breakfast was good but the service was very slow.

All in all it was good value for money but the whole hotel is in need of a complete refurbishment to bring it up to modern standards.

“Old fashioned but charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

We stayed here one night in Oct.and found it quaint and charming. The street was a little noisy but interesting! The room was clean with a modern bathroom and breakfast was awesome. No elevator which was hard for some guests.

Room Tip: Rooms in the front are right on the street.

“Very friendly hotel but needs updating”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

We arrived in Thurso early afternoon and checked with the information centre on the best hotels in Thurso. She showed us where the hotels were and checked with Trip advisor on the reviews on each one. The Pentland Hotel came up as being the better hotel, We went in and the receptionist was very friendly and promptly booked us in for the night. We found the room easily. The room and the bathroom were a good size. It was in a good position on the side of the hotel opposite the church. The bell tolled every hour, but that wasn't a problem. The television was a little dated, it was a portable with a little freeview box. We enquired about wi-fi, but that was only available in the reception. The reception lounge was a very comfortable place, with lots of comfy sofas and chairs.

Thurso doesnt have many restaurants, the Pentland had a nice restaurnat, but we chose to go to Le Bristro which was very popular. My husband had the lamb sausages, but they werent very "lamby". We think though that this caused offence when we commented on it. I had a lovely steak which was expensive

Breakfast was very good. All the breakfasts were cooked to order and were exceptionally good. The waitress was chatty and made us feel very welcome.

We would definitely stay here again if were ever in the area.

“It was a return stay, and we were a little dissapointed this time.”

We returned to Thurso and as we had stayed here before there was no question of going anywhere else. Room fine, but looked a bit tired, A chair needed repair. I nearly went flying when I sat on it, so very wobbly.
The breakfasts were very good, and the staff could' nt have been more helpful, which I could not say for the staff on the reception. It looks as if they ae not trained in speaking to the public, or perhaps they just cannot be bothered.
We visited friends and were out until 11.30pm. We rang and rang for the night porter, but noone came, and in the end I had to go searching for someone to give us our room key!!

On leaving I paid the person behind the desk, but not a word like have you had a good stay. Thurso is my home town, and everyone I come across are so friendly and helpful, but sadly my visit at the pentland did not come in this catogory, and I am sad to say so after having looked forward to coming north so much.
