“Annexe room awful”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

We had a room in the annexe, which as has been previously mentioned was very damp. The grout in the bathroom tiles was black with damp and the room was very cold with a musty smell. The walls were thin and we could hear the people next door talking, coughing, etc, hence a very bad night's sleep. On the positive side, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was reasonable.

“Perfect if you want to go to the Orkney”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2010

The host was extremely nice and gentle, the room was very spacious and finally I found very dark and heavy curtains that allowed me to sleep very well also in the morning!
We chose this hotel because it was only 15 minutes by car from the ferry to go to the Orkney, so great location as well!

“We loved the Castle Arms!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2010

The Castle Arms was a real mix of old world hospitality and modern comforts. Our room was very comfortable with good facilities. Our hosts Myra and John were delightful! They loved to share their knowledge of the local area and were keen to hear all about our daily adventureswhile indulging in a "wee dram!". The food was fabulous and catered for all tastes.
This is a part of Scotland that we will surely remember.

“Don't stay in the annex”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2010

This hotel was in an exellent location. There was no one on reception to greet you on arrival. The rooms we had were in the annex at the back of the hotel. so this is all that we can comment on. The rooms had the doors open when we were shown round and looked fine. It was only when we retired for the night we found one of the rooms very damp with a musty smell and the blind (which was dirty) was too small for the window. Now for the comedy of errors, otherwise known as meal times. If using the restaurant on the evening, we would recommend you book your meal on the morning. We had a wait of over an hour, during which time we did hear some cursing coming from the kitchen. The food - when it did arrive - was fantastic!!! The waitress throughout was very apologetic and did keep us informed of where our order was. Breakfast was extremely average and not value for money. There is a very very limited vegetarian menu.

Our restaurant is particularly busy during the summer season and a wait is sometimes unavoidable, however we will always advise customer about a wait. Your comments about "cursing coming from the kitchen" has been passed on to our chef, and he is currently reviewing the situation.

“pleasant surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2010

We stayed here because it is very close to the ferry to Orkney out of Gills Bay. The rooms are a bit dated but well-kept and a room near ours was being painted. Dinner and drinks were a pleasant surprise, especially considering how remote the location is. Food was well prepared and the barman (and owner) was very enjoyable to chat with. Overall, it was a very good value.
