“I cannot understand why anyone writes anything good about it”

From the several hairs in the expensive food ( I jest not) greeted with a shrug and no refund - ask about the limited menu in the cold and uninviting restaurant before you go, not afterwards - to the 'hot' breakfast served cold, to the prison block accommodation that mysteriously disappears from all the photographs - demand to see a proper photograph not the edited version on the website - this is a miserable, awful place to stay, except for the lovely view out to sea, I absolutely cannot understand why anyone has anything good to say about this place. Evidently people do, though, so I suppose we must have just had a bad experience, which was a shame as we were on holiday. Bad it was though, very bad.

“"Should be Number 1 in the rankings"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

Stayed at this fabulous Hotel whilst on a business trip. The trip was extended from four days to two weeks but the ever helpful owners and staff managed to accommodate the changes to my itinery, during an extremely busy period for them. The lengthened stay meant a room change for me which was accomplished with ease and with a smile by my host.
They could not have been more helpful and I cannot overstate my appreciation of their assistance.
This is indeed an extremely well run Hotel with fine views of the beautiful coastline and the Orkney Islands (on a good day). My rooms were of an excellent standard, superbly clean, well decorated, bright and very comfortable, with good views of the bay. I particularly enjoyed the mouth-watering Shortcake Biscuits and coffee at the end of the days work!
The food is delicious and is well presented with efficient and ever friendly service form all restaurant staff.
This super little Hotel ensured that I experienced 'home comforts', whilst being 750 miles away from my home for an unexpectedly long period. Full marks to the Melvich!
I would recommend them, without doubt, for anyone wanting friendly, relaxed but efficient service in a well presented and very well run Hotel.
The only thing I did not like about my stay with the Melvich was leaving at the end of it!

“Great service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

We spent two wonderfully relaxing nights at Melvich care of the superfriendly owners Jo and Rob during Easter 2011. What a place... on the top of the hill overlooking the beautiful bay, and with Orkney in the distance. The hotel is perfectly situated for exploring this amazing coastline.
The room we were given was spacious and very comfortable, beautifully decorated - like the rest of the building - with stylish photographs on the walls and thick, soft carpets. Sea views of course! The restaurant was excellent - Rob's steak was a treat, and the breakfast delicious.

All in, a great stopover on a coastal driving holiday, the highlight of our week, and highly recommended :o)

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view :o)

“First Rate in all respects”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

We stayed at the Melvich Hotel on holiday and were surprised to find hotels like this still existed. It is a small hotel but very well run. They have got it all right, the rooms are comfortable, the ambiance is excellent, the food is very tasty and well served, the whole package is more like staying with caring family than in a hotel.
We sat in their comfortable lounge, one evening, and talked to another guest who was on business - he also felt it was good as he was able to use his computer in addition to the comforts he liked.
We had our cat with us, as we always do, and she was welcomed too.
We only wish the hotel didn't shut for the winter as we enjoyed it so much.

Room Tip: We had room 3 and the view was excellent over the sea.

“Excellent restaurant”

We stayed at a nearby B&B but had our dinner at this hotel. Excellent food, very nice staff, very nice location.

Room Tip: Sorry, did not stay overnight.
