“Nice self-catering behind main building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 March 2011

The proprietors have a self catering cottage behind the main building which was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The kitchen is well equipped and there is a Spar shop next door and a Tesco about 10 minutes walk away. There is a hospitallity tray for a cuppa if you need a drink on arrival. The owners have membership of the Dalfaber country club and can provide a card if required which allows access to the swimming pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room.

“Dissapointed”

I would just like to start off by saying that we are the young couple from Niddrie, Edinburgh and that we did NOT write the previous bad review.

Arriving at the guesthouse we were pleased with the location and the room. The reason our stay was unpleasant was because on our second after arriving back to the guest house after a nice walk in the woods after breakfast we were greeted by shouting coming from upstairs but didn't think anything of it. Whilst taking my boots off at the front door (as they were muddy and I didnt want to make a mess of the carpet), a woman who we had not seen in our time at the guest house came running down the stairs raising her voice demanding our key back. We had no idea what was going on and after following her back up the stairs discovered that all our things were lying in the hallway not even packed away properly. She then started saying that we were getting thrown out for smoking in our room. I was absolutely livid! I tried explaining that we have more respect for people than that! And that we were NOT smoking in our room. But she didn't want to hear it. She then went onto say that it must have been off our breath and that our clothes that were on the bed didn't smell of smoke. So who knows how the room could smell of smoke but not the clothes that we had been wearing? We had asked if necessary, could we go out after midnight for a cigarette, which we didn't need to as we were sleeping by this time. Anyway, by the time we left aviemore I was more upset than angry, I have never been treated like this from anyone and think it's absolutely disgusting to treat someone this way! I think that before you go blaming someone for something you should have proof as we did not smoke in the room and I think that if you really thought that we had you would have charged us for the 2 days of business lost!

The above review has been written by guests who were asked to leave the establishment due to their unacceptable behaviour.

The couple were booked in for a three night stay at our B&B. After their first night, my wife and I went to freshen and replenish their room, as is our daily practice and as recommended by Visit Scotland. The smell of smoke was overwhelming and quickly spread into the hall and stairway.

As proprietors, we have a legal responsibility to ensure that current legislation with respect to No Smoking in guest accommodation is upheld. Failure to do so, can result in us, as owners, being taken to court. No Smoking information is displayed in the rooms informing guests that if ignored, they will be asked to leave immediately.

We had no option but to ask the couple to leave due to the severity of the smell of smoke. However, the review has grossly exaggerated our reaction and behaviour. Under the circumstances, we remained civil. The couple's denial that they were smoking can only be described as ridiculous. To avoid or minimise any unpleasantness we did not ask for any surcharge or payment for the remainder of their reservation despite our awareness that the room was now unfit to let and we would suffer financial loss.

Interestingly, the couple's parting comment was that we should advertise on our website that we do not accept smokers. We told them that we have no problem with guests that smoke and we have never found it necessary to take this course of action before. All that we expect is that smokers respect legislation and leave the premises whenever they wish to smoke.

It is apparent that the couple have scored our establishment to reflect their grievance, despite the situation being brought on by themselves. Our B&B is subject to an annual incognito overnight stay from Visit Scotland to assess our quality standards. Now in our sixth year of business, we have always gained the maximum score for cleanliness and hospitality. For the past two years, we have been graded the very top score for a 4 Star accommodation provider - only one percent off being awarded 5 Star grading. This achievement would not be attained unless cleanliness is immaculate and hospitality is welcoming, helpful and friendly.

“5 star experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 April 2010

We had the pleasure to stay at the Strathspey House in April and we absolutely enjoyed every single aspect of our experience. I rarely give excellent reviews but this place absolutely deserves it. It is indeed very hard to find anything to complain about - tastefully decorated rooms cleaned on a daily basis, excellent breakfast (with some very good variety), and extremely helpful staff happy to answer any question and provide useful information about the local area. In addition, the fact that you can use the facilities of the nearby Dalfaber Golf and Country Club is certainly a plus. In fact, from the hair dryer to the complimentary hospitality tray provided you could see that the hosts had thought about every single detail and nothing was missing. We really liked the personal touch of this 4 star B&B and would warmly recommend Strathspey House to anyone considering going to Aviemore.

“Fantastic Guest House”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2010

Have visited this establishment on numerous occasions and found it without fault.Very welcoming and Glen and Fiona are very helpfull with things to do and walks etc in the area.It is an absolutely spotless guesthouse and frankly one can only presume the previous reviewer has reviewed the wrong guesthouse! My advice is to read all the reviews which are a true reflection and we shall most certainly be booking again.

I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy, the staff were extremely rude. The service was poor and disorganized. The rooms are average and not value for money.
