“Much better than most reviews”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 February 2011

Let us say at once that we don't regret saying at Onslow Guest House at all. We looked at Trip Advisor after booking a three night stay (yes, we know - the wrong way round) and it's fair to say that we got the impression from most of the other reviews that we had made a mistake.

We can't remember all of the comments but addressing the ones we can remember:

1. The breakfasts were ample, well cooked and used good quality ingredients. There was fruit (Fair Trade bananas, oranges) and cereals (individual packets, not from a dispenser), a Scottish fry (bacon, sausage, egg, good quality baked beans, black pudding and a potato scone), toast, butter/jam and as much tea or coffee as you could drink. We ate so much that we didn't need lunch. There was also a selection of newspapers avaliable.

2. Parking was not a problem at all. There are three places off the road in front of the guest house, more if one was able to double park. We parked on the road, which was easy, felt safe and involved just crossing the traffic-calmed street.

3. The building, we believe, is listed, and so the rooms have been carefully converted. We stayed in room one, an enornous room with lovely plasterwork and a well equiped ensuite shower room that had not damaged the ceiling or made the room feel at all small.

4. Everybody was very friendly, wanted to know where we had been that day, and were concerned that we enjoyed our stay.

5. We comfortably walked into the city every day, taking about 20 to 25 minutes, although if you wanted to, a five minute walk down the hill it would put you on Duke Steet where buses run very frequently.

6. The room had tea, coffee and hot chocolate making faciliites with nice biscuits. When we ran out they were replenished at once. The TV was good and had far more channels that we ever needed. We didn't do this; but there seems to be no objection to bringing a take-away and eating it in the breakfast room.

The negative reviews seem to describe a very different B&B to the one we stayed in. We'd certainly recommend the Onslow Guest House to any of our friends and we are certain they would not feel let down.

one of the most horrible experience i ever had in uk. was promised a good room but given a room on the attic with no covering of the roof and hardly any space to breathe between the bed and the roof. was extremely rude on asking different room. hence left the hotel for another good one, but they debited money from my credit card inspite of promising that they won,t do it. the mistake i did was signing the form before checking the room as we always do anywhere. when called up to resolve the issue, he was very ill-mannered and uncivilised.

“RUDE RUDE RUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

This place looks absolutely spotless from the outside and in the main lobby, but a closer look reveals dirty little rooms. The staff ,who i think is the owner, was very very rude and unhelpful. I would rather pitch up a tent than go back!!!
The only good thing about it was a ten minute drive to the city centre where you can find a much better place to sleep

“Outrageous service, noisy, rubbish breakfast”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2010

I sent the following email complaint to the owners:
1. We reported a simple problem with the curtains having come off their rails - because there were no end-stoppers - but had a very negative response from the person at reception. He refused to put the curtains back on their rails, but also refused us access to the ladder to do the job ourselves.
2. There are in effect only 2 proper car-parking spaces, and having come in after the others (not late - about 8.30pm) I had to move my car at 7.30am in the morning to allow someone else to get out.
3. Given that our room is next to reception and was very noisy this morning AND we have a very uncomfortable bed, we asked to move to another room. The person in charge said it was too late THEN insisted there wasn't a room free. When we said we didn't believe him and were unhappy with the service he said we should leave. I said we would do so as long as he refunded the money we prepayed for the remainder of our stay. He refused.
4. By this stage I was very annoyed so I asked to speak to the manager. He said (at 9.15pm) it was too late, and he couldn't be disturbed.
I could have added:
1. I had a large spider in my breakfast teapot. I noticed after I'd poured a cup. Just in time.
2. The shower leaks. It's one of those awful all-in-one units.
3. Breakfast sucks. Everything is of VERY poor quality, and fried (perhaps to disguise the fact). I asked for grilled bacon - they said no. I asked for a grilled tomato (instead of baked beans) - they said no. There is only instant coffee.
4. Our room was incredibly draughty.
5. I walked towards the TV at breakfast in order to turn up the volume (the TV news was on) or put on the subtitles (to avoid disturbing other visitors). The receptionist came and grabbed the remote control from me, and when I asked insisted that I wasn't allowed.

“CUSTOMER SERVICE STINKS”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2010

I booked a room for a friend who came to visit for 4nights and it was agreed that icouldcome in anytime in the morning and leave by 11pm for the duration of his stay. The onlycondition was for me not to spend the night. Johnny however came knocking on the door first at abt 10:30pm the first night to remind me that i ought to leave by 11pm. This was totally embarassing and humiliating as there was no cause for his knocking and yelling "dont 4get to leave @ 11pm". When i got in the next morning @ 7:30am, Johnny told me icouldnt go in as i was disturbing other guests, we got in2 an argument over this and i informed him how embarsassing the scenario was, Tony however came and let me in. Johnny came knocking again the 2nd day to tell us to keep d noise down, we are disturbing his guest, even tho we were just 2 people chatting. My friend got really pissed and asked to change hotels but Johnny informed us that theycouldnt refund our money hence we were in for the long haul. Need i also mention that they promised us the use of the microwave and fridge, only to find out that the microwave at timelines of use, this also came from Johnny. The room was also not cleaned nor fresh sheets given as we were informed when we lodgedcomplaints on the third day that the room key was supposed to be dropped by 10am everyday for rooms to get cleaned. This was obviously notcommunicated previously. My flatmate also booked a room for five days for her parents. When her parents however arrived they informed her they wanted to stay for just 3nights and not 5. Johnny insisted that they had to pay for the full 5nights duration (i.e. 160pounds extra) even though they werent staying that long. In summary, the Onslow guest house has a totally customer service especially with Johnny as one of the members of staff.
