“Decent hotel/guesthouse at very reasonable rates”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

I was looking for a hotel/guesthouse in the West End of Glasgow at extremely short notice for Hogmanay, and booked an ensuite room at the Clifton Hotel for a very reasonable £39.

At that price, I wasn't expecting too much but I was pleasantly surprised when I checked into the room (Room 9), as it was extremely clean, well-furnished and included tea/coffee making facilities, a large plasma TV and plenty storage space. The bathroom was small but very modern and again very clean.

I would agree that there is a fair amount of noise from traffic on Great Western Road, but as I was only staying one night, arriving late and leaving early, this wasn't a problem for me at all.

Cooked breakfasts were served in a small room just off the reception, but other than that there isn't anything else to the hotel, it really is more of a guesthouse.

If you are looking to stay in the West End and aren't overly bothered about hotel facilities and just want a nice room at a cheap price, then I'd recommend this place. However, DO NOT USE THE LOMOND HOTEL OR BOTANIC HOTEL which are also on Great Western Road/Buckingham Terrace (see my other reviews).

Room Tip: Room 9 is well furnished with a good bathroom, but is at the front so can be noisy

“Good location good breakfast poor staff”

**NB: This review of 3 stars is given conditionally on the basis that staff customer service is improved. **

"The Clinton hotel" is a little misleading as a name for the type of facilities that are on offer. I would describe the Clinton as a good guest house (as it is listed by the AA guide and Visit Scotland) rather than a hotel. The building is lovely and the location is fantastc, just a short walk to the subway to take you right into the heart of Glasgow.

We stayed in room 14 which has taken a bit of a bad rap from this website. Although the view is bad the room was relatively clean ( some marks on the walls). The bathroom was very nice although i did struggle with the shower because of the low ceiling (I'm 6ft ). Friends of ours were staying in other rooms on the front of the building and their rooms were of a better standard. I would advise that at the time of making your booking you ask for any room other than 14 if the comments from other reviews put you off staying here, because the standard of rooms elsewhere in the clifton is pretty high for a guest house.

I would say that the main problem is the quality of customer service. Staff were quite abrupt during breakfast and seemed desperate to get everyone through asap rather than letting them enjoy the good breakfast that was provided (which was much better than the sort of thing offered at most travelodge places)

The nice reception area, with sofas and a television seemed to serve as the staff room rather than a place where guests could sit and relax which was a disappointment. It also made you feel rather aquard when you were there , as if you were imposing on their time.

I would say that the clifton could be a much nicer place to stay with one simple improvement: a little staff training in customer service. If the general attitude improved i would definitely recommend the clifton to a friend.

“Friendly staff and convenient location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2011

This was our second trip to the Clifton and again we were in room 12. The room was very clean and spacious, it is front facing with single glazing so you do get traffic noise but it is to be expected in a City like Glasgow. Our radiator didn't work so we were freezing our first night but we soon had a portable heater in the room and the main heater was repaired on our second night. Breakfast was very filling and served quickly. Parking can be difficult if you have a large car, we made sure we were back at the car park for 3pm and never struggled for a parking space.
Bathroom needed to be replaced, bath was cracked but all in all we had a nice stay and would return.

Room Tip: Go for a rear facing room if the road noise is likely to bother you.

“customer service - sorry whats that again?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

Nice guest house, its says it is a hotel but you cant call somewhere a hotel if theres no facilities/room to sit other than the room itself!

The price is fair for the room, bathrooms modern and clean, room decent size but fairly basic which is what you would expect for that price. Towels were replaced next day which was nice but the floor which needed hoovered wasn't.

Check in smooth and polite but this was the staff at their best! The rest of the stay we were witnesses to some of the best examples of worst customer service ever! Working in a hotel, bar and restaurant ourselves we know the importance of customer service and frankly there was none at the Clifton! The first morning for breakfast we arrived at 845am and sat down without being greeted. The kitchen door was open which was very very distracting and slightly unpleasant. Good range of cereals, juice and fruit. Felt a little like being herded through breakfast so that the staff could finish and get theirs! Our group felt very uncomfortable when some girls were confronted bluntly about breakfast being finished when they had been waiting for a few minutes to even be acknowledged. It was literally a minute or 2 past 9am and the receptionist/chef/waitress came out and argued with them very rudely until giving in eventually! Most of the staff during our stay were either rude, abrupt or had no manners at all - thumping breakfast in front of you with no excuse me please just excuse me! Also 7am to 9am for breakfast at the weekend is slightly on the mean side especially when its a weekend to relax!

I would not come back again simply because of the staff! Nice place if you don't care for good customer service!

Room Tip: room 5 nice and spacious, but front facing so noisy! Room 9 good for single person but noisy! Room 1...

“Great value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

This hotel is great value for money, located ideally for the "west end", opposite Oran Mor at the top of Byres Road, no hesitation in using this hotel again.

Room Tip: We chose a room downstairs at the back of the hotel, and never heard a thing all night. Perfect for...
