“A good location though...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

Situated not far from Georges Square this place is well situated within handy reach of most central places in Glasgow and it is reasonably priced too. The rooms are just about big enough for a double bed which was v comfortable so nothing luxurious here. Ensuite was functional but needed smartening up as did the whole place if we are honest. Red walls and blue carpets with ceilings in purple in the communcal areas all make for a dingey experience. But the staff are young and friendly enough which made up for the cold breakfast. If I was paying for myself I would probably go back but otherwise not.

Room Tip: The rear of the building has to be quieter surely?

“noisy, poky in need of some tlc”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

had stayed here a few years ago midweek and found it fine but a different story at weekends. the bar has a dj at weekends and the noise of both this and the clients made for a very noisy weekend. The rooms are poky and not terribly clean (stains on carpets, black grouting in bathroom). Overall the whole place needed a good clean and decoration. Staff friendly enough and stored our bags but would not return.

“Great Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

We just spent the night at the Brunswick as we were at a party in the Penthouse of the hotel. Our room was indeed small as they had stated themselves, but was clean and comfortable and very reasonably priced. As mentioned in trip advisor reviews, the decor is dark and a bit off putting, but everything was made up for by the warmth and hospitality of the staff. From the moment we arrived, nothing was too much bother. The hotel bar and restaurant is shabby to look at, but the ambience, food and service were excellent. Book your table to be sure to get one, and definately eat here.
The breakfast may look basic when you walk in, but it is included in the price of the room, and staff were not satisfied until they had offered a seemingly never ending selection of hidden extras of continental style options and an array of coffees I had never heard of. Cheerful and vibrant, staff arriving for work on a Sunday morning (some who had been in the night before until the early hours as guests can drink in the bar until 4am) were relaxed and happy, adding to the good feel of the place.
We didn't expect a view, and liked the quietness of the streets. It was noisy until 2am as staff had told us it would be, but music stopped exactly when they said, and all was quiet with no sound of traffic in the morning.

Room Tip: Probably quieter the further up the floors you go, but do expect the rooms small and the decor poor...

“We Wanted to Like it More!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

We had been hoping for a really nice modern hotel in Merchant City.
The location is wonderful, and is.near really interesting restaurants...the exterior architecture of the Georgian facades is on going and beautiful, and the staff
at the front desk as well as the owner were helpful. But the hotel is in real need
of proper upkeep....chipped paint on the walls, a sofa in our room with stains and rips, thin carpet which bunched in the dark hallways, and bad tile work and a plastic tub with a small crack in it. I wondered if the hotel had been thrown together in haste without the usual Scottish pride in workmanship. Our bed was comfortable, though it
took up so much space there was barely room to get out on one side without crawling over it, and there was noise from the cafe/bar below until about 11 at night...
not good for those of us who wished to get up early to see all the sights of this great city. The breakfast was of a continental type, but ran out of yhogurt two times, and had only very basic fare. Still the hotel is in a great location, and one can hope they fix up the premises before the next Michelin visit. I wish I could give this place a better review....really!

Room Tip: Find out if they have renovated before you book, and remember the rooms are very small.

“Cramped and shabby”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

I was being the good corporate citizen and saving my company a few sheckels by staying at this hotel. I now understand why it was so cheap.

A very unprepossessing street entrance led to the smallest "reception" I've ever been in - if there was someone behind me waiting to check in they would had to have waited in the street. Behind the reception desk was a very cheerful and friendly chap who nevertheless managed to turn my two night booking into a one night booking. Once fixed I made my way to my room along narrow, dark and dingy corridors.

They were obviously aiming for "compact and bijou" in the design of the rooms but instead hit "cramped and shabby". My room (101) had exposed wiring by the bathroom mirror, mould above the shower, peeling paint on the ceiling, a broken window latch and generally looked very tired. The bed was very low - obvious when you think about it: putting a full sized bed in there would have made the room even more cramped than it was. You *could* swing a cat in the room, but it would be mightily upset afterwards.

I didn't make use of the eating facilities so can't comment on them. There were other considerably cheaper and better looking places nearby which I chose over the attached restaurant.

Been there, done it. Won't be going back.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else
