We took the #905 bus from Paisley Airport to the corner of Derby and Sachiehall St. and from there the Argyll was less than a block away. The staff is pleasant and helpfull and there is a lift available to bring your luggage upstairs. We found the room clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. The city centre is a reaonable walking distance if you enjoy a good walk (20 mins.). If not, there is a bus service available accross the street. They have a nice little restaurant downstairs. They serve a great buffet breakfast - eggs, toast, sausage, bacon, black pudding, cereal, fruit and yogurt... everything you need for a good start to your day. We stayed two nights and before flying to Ireland we booked two more nights for our return trip.

  • Liked — The convenience
  • Disliked — I would say the 5am garbage collection but if I'd left the window closed I wouldn't have heard it.

Whist we cannot fault the cleanliness of the bed linen and floor to the bedroom, we would like to bring a number of other issues to the attention of potential customers.

Despite using the label ‘Hotel’ on numerous occasions, the accommodation on offer falls short of basic hygiene standards found in most B&B’s. In addition, their website claims the accommodation has been recently refurbished, is a friendly Glasgow ‘HOTEL’ and is of 3 star standard. We were soon to find was not the case.

Following our check in at the Angus Hotel (across the road from the Argyll Guest House!), we found an awful musty smell throughout the communal corridor areas. In addition, it was quite apparent that the accommodation throughout had NOT been decorated for some considerable time. Scuff marks and peeling wallpaper was evident throughout our bedroom walls and the radiator was in desperate need of a paint. On examination of the ensuite, mould growth was clearly apparent to the walls and ceiling. In addition the toilet seat was broken, resulting in injury to myself and the ensuite floor was sticky and had not been cleaned thoroughly prior to our visit.

In addition, because the Argyll Guest House is not manned, communication is only via an inconvenient short walk across Sauchiehall Street to their sister hotel – the Angus Hotel.

We offered the receptionist at the Angus Hotel an opportunity to view for herself our concerns however the offer was declined. Instead I was asked to put my grievance to the manager in writing. Not once was an apology made during our visit. Having since provided the manager with an opportunity to discuss the issues raised, no attempt has since been made to contact us.

Please note, Bed and Breakfast accommodation can be sought at a cheaper rate and far closer to the City Centre of Glasgow than the Argyll Guest House. Our decision to stay at the Argyll Guest House/Hotel was based on its misleading Hotel status as is clearly identified throughout their website.

Needless to say, we would strongly recommend anyone to avoid this B&B.

Although the Tourist Centre B&B map for Glasgow locates the guesthouse within a 5 minute walk from the center, the actual location of the guesthouse is not there at all! It's about 25 minutes walk to the main areas. Probably that's why it took us more than half an hour to find the place. Once inside, there was a terrible smell of paint in the room.

We tried cancelling our reservation for those reasons, but they said their policy was to charge one night (60 pounds) if you cancel the same day of your stay.

At the end we felt forced to stay and had to sleep with the windows open.

I would certainly not recommend this place.

For the price we paid for the room, we were pleasantly suprised when we arrived. The Argyll Guesthouse (formerly the Angus Guesthouse) is the "sister" property of the Argyll Hotel, which is located directly across the street. Our room was spacious with a very comfortable bed/bedding. I enjoyed having a bathtub, which was a rarity in the budget accomodations we employed during our travels in Scotland. Our room was facing the street, and was a bit noisy on Friday night, as Argyll Street is a fairly major thoroughfare. The gentleman who received us at reception was very friendly, and our stay was a pleasant one. Internet access is available for guests (although we found the price a bit steep at 3 pounds per hour). The biggest drawback -- for us, anyway -- was its location in Glasgow. It is on the west end of town, which is great for visiting the attractions in that area (such as the Kelvingrove Museum), but it was a hike to the central and east ends of town.

  • Liked — Size and quality of room in relation to the price paid. Great value!
  • Disliked — Location on the west end of town

The Angus is a very good bargain for the money. It's not the Ritz, but the rooms are clean and tastefully decorated. Location is next to a university and the center of town is a good 20 minute walk down Sauciehall St., though public transportation and taxis are easily available. A couple of things about the rooms: as you would expect with most UK hotels the single rooms at the Angus are smaller than most walk-in closets, so I would highly recommend reserving a double room at minimum; also, try to reserve a front room facing Sauciehall. My room was in back of the hotel, which shares a courtyard with a number of residential buildings full of people who like to party and crank up the music at all hours. I can't say enough good things about the staff, they were friendly and went above and beyond without hesitation. When I returned home, I realized that I left a dress back at the hotel. I asked one of the staff to ship the dress to me if it was still there, and they could put the postage costs on my credit card. Not only did they express mail my dress back, but did it at their own expense. Would definitely stay at the Angus again.
