“More than expected...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

McLays Guest House offered much more than I expected. Our room was clean and comfortable and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. There were no issues with noise or other guests. We also had a car and had no trouble with on-street parking. In addition to the full Scottish breakfast, they also served coffee, tea, juice, yogurt, and cereal. This was a wonderful place and I would definitely stay there again.

“great stay great city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

stayed for 10 nights, staff always friendly, good price for closeness to city centre, the room was clean and the bed very comfortable, breakfast was good, plenty of cereals, yogurts, toast, juice, as well as the fried breakfast if you wanted it, clean towels everyday, room was warm and the tv only had sky but i don't go on holiday to watch tv, there was a slight pounding from a nearby nightspot but thats not the hotels fault earplugs did the trick, i'll definitely stay here again when i visit this great city again, from an englishman!

Room Tip: room at the back if you don't like a slight pounding for a couple of hours around midnight not a...

“Good, cheap, friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

Great location, friendly staff, awesome value for money. Could do with a bit of redecorating, apart from that its a good place to stay. Second time there, so I definitely would go back.

“one night, not enough”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

I stayed here for a night and didn't have very high expectations because it was so cheap but was shocked when I checked in to find such a nice place. It's very homely and the rooms are great value for money. All the staff were very helpful and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

“Never Again - owner more concerned for her cold toast!!”

we arived 15 minutes early and was rudely greeted by a woman who made this fact very clear to us and acted like she was doing us a massive favour by checking us in early. she advised us of the rules of the guest house and pointed us in the right direction of our room (£56 for 2 people, 1 night). After working our way round a million corridors, stairs and sweaty, out-dated hallways, we arrived at our room, which seemed to be hidden at the back somewhere! It was small, cold, loud (you can here every movement of the people upstairs having showers) and very in need of a re-vamp. The blind didnt work and the curtains were awkward to close. The "duvet" was so old, it had lumps of filling dotted around and the rest of it was just like sleeping with a sheet. The TV was small and old and up high on the wall, and came with no remote and everytime you turned it on it came on full volume! The room was generally clean, just out-dated. The en-suite was clean enough, but the shower leaked all over the floor when switched on and the shower kept switching itself to the tap option when you are having a shower. Two towels were provided, that were clean but really rough and smaller than the average towel. Woke up in the morning and the room was freezing cold. Breakfast was awful, was asked whether we wanted a cooked breakfast, which we did, but wasnt told what it consisted of and evidentially i couldnt eat mine because it was drowning in beans! it was beans, a greasy potato scone, an aneamic bit of bacon and an egg. coffee was weak and no glasses were provided for orange juice. Checked out not long after breakfast and asked the rude woman for some change and she said "can you give me a few minutes, i havent had any breakfast and now my toast has gone cold because ive been running around all morning". so we just left because our taxi was waiting. You certainly get what you pay for with this guest house, but i will certainly be paying more elsewhere next time!! never again!!

Room Tip: dont go in room 87!!
