“Good place to stay”

I enjoyed my week's stay at this Hotel - August 2011, it was clean and comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful. I stayed in Room 13 at the top of the house - the only downside was the 63 steps to reach it and yes, they did carry my luggage up for me - however, I'm in my 60's and had no problem with the stairs but if you have bad knees, back problems etc., or are very overweight you would be happier with a room on a lower lever as there is no lift. My room was a good size, nicely decorated with a comfortable bed. I didn't find the street noise to be a bother but I did close my window at night. I found the cooked breakfast to be just fine although I would have preferred real bacon to turkey bacon and there were certainly lots of other choices, fruit, yoghurt, cereal etc. It's an easy walk down to the subway and 7 mins to the Buchanan Shopping Centre. I'd recommend walking back via Byres Rd and Great Western Road as Great George St is quite a hill to walk up after a day of shopping (M & S have a food store at the bottom :). It's an easy and quick walk up to the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery and if you walk through to University Avenue from there, turn L & then R onto Kelvin Way to get to Kelvin Gallery you save yourself a lot of time (first time I did it I walked along Byres Rd and then University Avenue and that took ages). Byres Road has tons of shops and restaurants and I found all the people very nice. Watch out for the sidewalks - very broken up - very easy to trip. Glasgow Botanic is across the road and up to the left a bit at the intersection of Byres and Great Western and is well worth a visit - nice walks. As a woman travelling alone I felt very safe in this Hotel. The only downside I experienced was the happy Danish lads in the next room coming in at 1 am - they'd obviously had a good time - no real problem. Some people also might not like the sloping ceiling in Room 13. Local library on Byres will give you an hours free internet on their computers so you can stay in touch with family if you didn't bring a laptop with you. I enjoyed my weeks stay very much

“Awesome value!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

Me and my boyfriend were just staying for one night and we didn't arrive until 12am. The hotel is very clean, we were on the top floor and the view was great, the breakfast wasn't the best but what do you expect for the price?! Great range of things for breakfast though, cereals, fresh fruit etc. I thought the bed was very comfortable. If you are wanting to stay somewhere nice but affordable I would suggest here!

“Good value, but breakfast.....?!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

Stayed here during summer 2011, had two lovely rooms at very top of house which were well furnished, roomy and spotlessly clean, as was the rest of the hotel. Very comfortable bed. Shower could do with a lot more water pressure. Staff helpful and friendly bar one very sullen breakfast waitress. Breakfast was a tad disappointing with rubbery scrambled egg and 'turkey rashers' rather than bacon, but there is plenty of decent cold alternatives on offer, and they catered well for my vegetarian son. Not a hotel for those with mobility or weight problems, there is no lift and it is four storeys high, but a beautiful old victorian building with many original features and first class for public transport links to city centre and beyond. Parking is available but not at hotel, we parked in Kelvinbridge underground station's park and ride, which is just a few minute's walk away, there is also on street parking available in the adjacent streets.

Room Tip: Ask for a back room if you are sensitive to traffic noise.

“Not a good choice”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

This hotel was a great disappointment. First impressions are very bad and it then gets worse.
To get into the hotel involves side entrances to the terrace passing litter and broken glass strewn dirty areas - one being a gathering place for local druggies. Both involve a steep climb from the main road. There is no vehicle access to this terrace (which is probably the grottiest in the West End of Glasgow). Once in the hotel do not expect any help with luggage. The stairway is steep and winding. The banister is just attached in one place where a bolt has broken. The rooms are small. The room never got adequately cleaned. Rooms at the front are very noisy. There are no net curtains. In the small bathroom the shower was weak and the sink sloped so everything fell off. and the shower was left dirty. The lighting in the rooms is very poor. Towels were small and falling to pieces. Breakfast was grotty and was stone cold on my 1st day. The turkey rashers are still there - yuk. Staff are not the friendliest. This hotel is really one to avoid - I will not be going back and wish I had not been there.

Room Tip: Do not bother

“Funky”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

Just returned back from Glasgow after staying two nights in the Heritage. Room 23 was very clean on the second floor at the front looking out onto the main road. The stairs may be problem for fat, unfit or disabled people as they were very steep. The staff were pleasant and the hotel is in a nice area (Hillhead), with many pubs, cafes and restaurants of varied prices and types of food. I would take earplugs if, like me, you're a light sleeper, and avoid the turkey rashers and sausages at breakfast. They tasted, as my son would say, funky. ;-) Apparently, pork isn't allowed in the hotel due to the owner's beliefs, so I would have the cereals or poached egg on toast. (The scrambled eggs were poor as well.) So the food is my only gripe, but we only paid £95 so it was very good value and I would recommend this hotel.
