I stayed here as it was close to the road race I was doing; my sister had chosen the hotel due to it's handy location. On arrival the hotel looked a bit grim from the outside, but the lobby was bright and clean. The reception was very friendly and helpful; I was quickly checked in and given my room key with clear instructions about how to find it.
My room on the first floor was spacious and clean, although the furniture was rather old fashioned. The room was very hot as the radiators were on, reasonable enough considering the recent cold, wet weather, but easily fixed by switching them off and opening the windows. My room was at the back so the view wasn't very exciting, but the hum of traffic from the M8 was quite soothing! There was a basic welcome tray, a very old television (which was fine to watch), a hair dryer, trouser press and in the wardrobe I found an iron, ironing board, spare pillows and spare large towel (I had a twin room but my race companion was unable to make it)
I was booked in for dinner; at £10 a head I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. The dining room was very quiet at 6-30 pm, just myself and another table of 4. The waitress was very friendly, helpful and attentive, bringing the menu promptly and leaving a large jug of water on my table when I requested water to drink. There were 3 courses on offer, each with 4 choices; the food was served in a timely fashion and was hot, fresh, tasty and generously portioned. The people at the table next to me had a problem with their main course; on complaining, the waitress very quickly apologised and offered replacement dishes.
I had a bath on the evening of my stay; there was plenty of hot water and the towels were not thin or too small.
My night's sleep wasn't too bad; I didn't sleep so well as was nervous about my race the next day but it wasn't helped by the absolutely appallingly lumpy pillows. The mattress was comfortable and the bed linen nice and clean.
Breakfast the next day was also very good; a reasonable selection of cereal, fruit, juice and toast plus hot items served buffet style. I found the bacon, egg, mushrooms and beans I had delicious. Tea and coffee orders were taken by the waitress and pots brought to the table; this was a bit of a let down as I'd almost finished most of my meal by the time my drink order was taken. The dining room was quite busy at opening because of the runners who were staying in the hotel so this may have caught them on the hop with hot drinks.
Checking out was again very straightforward; the receptionist was very friendly and my receipt was ready very quickly.
I was pleased with my stay; felt it good value for money and would stay again, despite the rather tired feel of the hotel.
If traffic noise bothers you, a room at the front would be better as there is a constant hum of traf...
