“clean, pleasant room, good breakfast, great location, attentive owner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2009

Stayed here to get my daughter settled at University of St Andrews. Good hot breakfast in downstairs dining room with other guests, tea/coffee and biscuits (cookies) in room, along with small refrigerator. Bill very helpful and friendly, stored extra bags for us without complaint rather than making us take them to our room, always ready with suggestions or to order cab, help with luggage. Let me leave my luggage there between checkout and late cab ride to train station, which was very helpful and not something everyone would do.

Nicely decorated, good sized room with lots of light. En-suite bathroom small by American standards (we're spoiled), but everywhere very clean and bright. If stairs are a problem, be sure to mention when booking room--we were on top floor, the climb was good for me, but I huffed and puffed a few times, especially after the large breakfast!

I rarely saw other guests except at breakfast, so if you are looking to socialize with new people, this may not be the place for you. Or if you need large American style bathroom.
But I like B&Bs, and would stay here again without question. Excellent location, 1-2 blocks to Old Course, The Scores (waterfront) and North Street. Easy walking anywhere in town. Murray Place is charming, full of B&Bs, lots of attractive signs and window boxes.

“OK, but . . . .”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2008

Because the owner, Bill, was such a nice fellow, it's with regret that I have to give Amberside a below-average grade. I enjoy staying at B&Bs in the UK in part because of the homey, comfortable atmosphere and the ability to linger in the front room over a good English breakfast. But at Amberside, unlike the other B&Bs on the same row, the front room has been closed off to guests, leaving no common area at all, and guests are supposed to have ungenerous continental breakfasts (cereal and toast) in their small rooms.

The rooms themselves are pretty standard B&B rooms -- reasonably nice but not lavish -- but the need to have a little breakfast table and fridge in each one for the little breakfast (see above) makes them pretty cramped.

So, while I very much wanted to like Amberside, I found it pretty disappointing.

“Ok but totally over priced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2007

For anyone looking to stay at St Andrews, it can be difficult to get accommodation, and then you are left with very few choices. I would not have chosen to stay in the Amberside, and if I had a choice again I would stay somewhere else. The room was ok, bright and airy but the decor was awful, the en-suite was tiny and the whole thing felt like it wasn't the cleanest. The breakfast was typical of b&s everywhere- no better and no worse. The owners were friendly and the location was good but I thought it was completely over priced for the standard of the accommodation.
