This was the third hotel we had stayed in that week, the most expensive but also the most basic. For that reason it was very disappointing, small room, austere bathroom with shower gel and soap dispensers that did not work and no other soaps, poorly managed staff who unhappily served a poor quality breakfast. And we had to pay to access their wi-fi. It was all clean so would be fine if you had paid a budget price. Go for the location which is great.

We searched online for a dog friendly hotel in St Andrews and the Ardgowan came up. On arrival the first thing we were told as we checked in was that the dog was not allowed in the Bar which is where all the meals are served. So in reality he was only allowed in the reception and our room. I understand that not everyone is a dog lover but to advertise as a pet friendly hotel and then restrict the pet to the room only is not what dog owners are looking for. This was made even more difficult by the fact that only 1 pub in the whole of St Andrews allowed dogs in, it was tiny and very busy with locals so we couldnt get in. We choose St Andrews as it had a beach and if all else faild i.e. the Scottish Weather we could always retire with our retriever to the bar. Instead we were confined to our room and forced to eat outside a pizza shop in the freezing cold.

Above that the Room was pretty tattie and the bathroom had a very strong hospital smell which was very over powering. Our window opened out above the kitchen and the smell of fat (obviously from the breakfast fry ups) filled our room. Our window looked out into the service yard and a wall directly infront. I guess bringing the dog put us into a second grade room. Not exactly Pet Friendly!

I think it should be made clear on the website that this is the case as it's not what dog owners consider Pet Friendly.

We really enjoyed staying at the Ardgowan Hotel. It is in a great location in regard to the golf course at St Andrews. Service was good, especially at reception and the restaurant provided good food at a reasonable price. We are sure this place will improve more when the renovations are complete

Stayed here for 4 nights, which allowed us to play 5 rounds of golf in some of the best links courses in the world. We were 3 guys staying in a triple room with third bed in a separated room. The breakfast was excellent.

The staff are friendly and extremely helpful.

The hotel is perfectly located with plenty of restaurants, bars (as well as the hotels' of course) and courses within walking distance.

Will come back if I'm lucky enough to visit Scotland again.
