“Outstanding Service in Great Location”

I stayed at the Russell in June with friends on a golf trip. The hotel is in a great location, less than 5 minutes walk to the Old Course. During our stay, Gordon and all his staff provided top-notch service. The meals in the restaurant were great, especially the breakfast. The bar was excellant, very friendly bartenders and a large selction of whiskeys.
If I get back to St. Andrews, I will definately stay here again.

“Great location and friendly staff”

We stayed here 5 nights in May, with another couple. The husbands golfed, the wives explored the town and surrounding countryside. The Russell is well situated to the Old Course and other courses. The weather left something to be desired, but we had little problems with the rooms or the service. The breakfast choices were excellent, and the wait staff very attentive. We had 2 dinners in the dining room and were very pleased with our meals.

The rooms are very small but clean. The walls are well insulated, and the windows can be opened to allow a bit of fresh air in. There is free wifi, which was very reliable as compared to some of the other places we stayed. For those who need it, you can send out for laundry service at a very reasonable 6.5 pounds sterling per load and we were able to get same day service.

The nice thing about St. Andrews was that there was free parking everywhere and mostly readily available.

Thanks to everyone on the Russell staff for making our stay enjoyable.

“Great base for Exploring or golfing”

Stayed here with 10 other golfers last weekend. Rooms are compact but comfortable with very nice bathrooms. Breakfast was really excellent and dinner looked good too although we had made other arrangements in advance.

Location is great with sea views to the front and you are only a 4 Iron from the Old Course.

However the best part of The Russell is the service. Every one of the staff were helpful and attentive. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

Thanks!

“Pleasant location but not worth the price”

Visiting St. Andrews University with our son. Hotel had been recommended to us. Lovely location on scones st overlooking the water and down the street, teh 18th hole on the old course. Beds were uncomfortable, room smelled of paint with the trim having been recently painted requiring us to leave the windows open all night, resulting in allot of noise from near by pubs and from Gulls calling all night. This was most expensive place we stayed the entire week long trip to Scotland but worse room. The pub is lovely and breakfast was excellent. The host was cheery and wonderful. However, will stay elsewhere in St Andrews on our next trip.

“A Guest House In Sheep's Clothing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2011

Its not a hotel it's a Guest House because its basically a pub with rooms and a restaurant. The propieters focus I think is on the food, which is very good, though not as cheap as some make out. The Rushacks hotel restaurant is as cheap with views over the golf course, beach and not in a claustrophobic back room.

As for the rooms: The hotel website boasts "all of our rooms are full ensuite" now that suggests a bath (maybe shower as well), sink and wc in a separate room not as our room had, a converted cupboard with a shower and wc shoe-horned in and the sink within the room itself! THIS IS NOT EN-SUITE!!!! Maybe in Scotland this is what passes for en-suite? Then they ought to stop using French phrases they don't understand and make something else up. Furthermore the kettel had to be plugged in and left on the floor because there was nowhere else to plug in into. I wouldn't n mind if we'd being paying £70-80 a night but to pay £138, as much as the Best Western up the road and then have a sink in the room is taking the preverbial and I intend to write to the Scotish Tourist Board who rate this dump 3 stars.

Sheeps clothing because you'll get fleeced!
