“"Maid" Marian is the best”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

My wife and I spent two nights here, an oasis in the new-town hinterland of Glenrothes, and very comfortable it was. The rooms are standard for the type but spotless, the staff are excellent, and the breakfast more than adequate for hold or cold fans, but best of all is the receptionist whose name is in the title. Always attentive, engaging in manner and the source of excellent advice for the needy re the much heralded Kingdom of Fife, Marian was the star of the staff - and that's saying something,

“Step up from a Travelodge – more please”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

Our first stay in a Holiday Inn Express. We couldn’t find a Travelodge room in the area for less than £50, so we thought if we were paying that much we’d try something else. In many ways, there aren’t many differences, but the reception area was somewhat less cheap-looking than a Travelodge usually is.
The room and bed were both fine, and I liked the idea of being able to use the bathroom door to separate the toilet from the rest of the bathroom, but as the shower cubicle had a glass side this was not entirely successful.
It was good to have breakfast included and there was a surprisingly large range on offer given what I assume are fairly limited cooking facilities available. We ignored the cooked breakfast buffet (it’s not a good way to treat a breakfast and it doesn’t matter if you’re a budget hotel or a luxury one, scrambled eggs that have been kept warm for 10 minutes or more are going to go either rubbery or watery, or, in exactly the right conditions, both) and went instead for toast and croissants, but there were plenty of cereals, fruits and fruit juices available too.
We’d thought we might start using Holiday Inn Expresses (Holiday Inns Express?) instead of Travelodges in future, but there seem only to be 4 in the country at present, so those days may be a while off.

“Great clean and friendly place”

We stayed 1 night in this hotel. My husband was skydiving nearby in St Andrews, which was only 10 minute drive! The service was excellent, the room was spotless, the breakfast was excellent great choice for my 12 and 9 year old. the bed was too soft for me but thats a personal choice! Plenty hot water and clean towles etc. We visited the pub next door and had a lovely meal and it was reasonably priced. We would defo use this hotel again if we were staying in the area.

“Satisfactory HI express, adjacent to good pub. Would use again”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

Accommodation is hard to find at Edinburgh festival time, so we opted to stay in Glenrothes and use the Ferrytoll park and ride. It worked out fine, and were happy with this HI express. We regularly use the brand and knew what to expect.

The rooms were fine and up to standard. They made up our rooms specially for us as we arrived early, which was nice, and offered a baby cot also. We found the baby preferred the sofa-bed, but it was nice to have the options.

We stayed several nights, and the hotel was used by several different touring coaches while we were there. It made for a bit of a jam at breakfast sometimes, but the staff quickly opened up the meeting room to make room. The staff at breakfast were generally very friendly and helpful, refilling when things run out and so forth.

The breakfast is standard HI, and thus is minimal, and a bit limiting for gluten free diets, but we coped. I'm happy with eggs and beans and coffee, which is what you can get. Coffee is a bit mechanised vending machine, and at times is not always brilliant! Juice likewise - but again this is uniform across the chain.

The main bonus is the adjacent pub. Excellent food and guest draught ales in the Fettykill Fox. Great for a all the family.

We would use again if in the area.
