“central and reasonably priced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

I've stayed here 2 years in a row when the fringe festivals been on and I think it offers good value for money, especially at fringe time as prices can escalate. It's used as student halls the rest of the year so I mean it's pretty basic - single rooms with a bed, chair, desk, and cupboard. There's a communal kitchen and bathroom and some dorms have more rooms than others. If you're unlucky you might have a noisy room as it is near pubs/clubs and roads but with the window closed I was able to sleep through without any trouble. If all you're looking for is a place to sleep then it's fine as it's clean and pleasant enough. You're also left to your own devices with your own set of keys which you pay a £10 refundable deposit for at the start, with no hassle from staff or anything. There also seems to be a right mix of people in terms of age groups. Will probably be back next year for the third year in a row.

“Good value for money”

Good location. 10 min walk from Waverley station. Quiet. It could have been a bit cleaner!

“Poor Customer Service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2011

My husband and I stayed at the Edinburgh Metro on multiple days. When we booked the hostel, we booked through the website for one male and one female. We were under the impression that we would be together in a twin room.... only to that was not the case. We weren't in the same apartment.... we weren't even on the same floor! The employees basically shrugged their shoulders and said that the past couple of years they haven't had mixed dorms, and there was no way we could be together unless one of the two shared rooms became available.
A couple of the employees were nice, although not particularily helpful with our issue. One of the managers (Eva), was very rude to both staff and customers.
The hostel appeared clean, but I have my suspicions that it wasn't as clean as it appeared. One of my husbands room had a wardrobe that was a foot away from the wall, and the bed was mispositioned... wouldn't a cleaner have fixed that? Also, one of the doorknobs in one of the apartments was hanging by a single screw and as such, did not really work. It would have been a very simple fix.
Would we stay here again? Only if nothing else was available for a decent price.

Pros: Good location (right off of Royal Mile, walk to Waverly Station), private rooms for single people
Cons: Lack of security (the luggage storage room was accesible to anyone who asked for a key, and there was no employee keeping an eye on what they took), did not accomodate their customers, possibly unclean, many flights of stairs to climb, Wi-fi barely worked and was expensive

“Just the place for a wee lass”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2010

Booked this place way in advance to stay during the festival and although it took me a while to understand that the only way you could walk to the entrance of the hostel is not from the main road that I walked up and down thinking to myself I had gone mental.

Super super welcome, the staff are friendly and will store your luggage if you've come before check in. As it was my first hostel, I was concerned, but the section I was in had 4-5 rooms? Shared bathroom, kitchenette, 1 extra toilet - which came in super handy. The sheets looked scary, but it was clean, the rooms really are student dorms. The girls staying in the other rooms were friendly and awesome and even met one of the performers as well. You forget that performer will need a place to stay too.

But one of the best things of all, unbeknownst to me, my partner organised with the staff here and picked up my birthday cake as the cake store didn't deliver. The staff sang happy birthday and a massive bag was presented to me with a boxed birthday cake. It really was nice of them, and I obviously couldn't eat the whole cake so they got some too.

Location really was pretty central in Edinburgh and I didn't think my room was noisy at all during the night. No Tv, but the room was spacious enough and it was a little annoying that the mirror was in the hallway and not in your room but the fact it was a hostel and you can still lock up your own room was awesome. One of the best features.

Great value - I wish it was open longer than just the summer.

“excellent room in an excellent location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2008

I travelled to Edinburgh for the Fringe fest and it was perfect. The staff were really helpful (thanks Rachel!) and it was a FAB location. It is a private single room and the bathrooms were a good size and always clean. Linen was provided and towels were cheap to hire. The kitchen facilities were great (if you wanted to use them) and it was close to everything. Internet cafe, places to get nice food and all of the venues for Fringe fest were close if not just around the corner. I had a great time and would recommend this place for everyone!
