We picked this hotel for its address really, we wanted Princes Street, close to the Waverley Station for its proximity to the castle, shops, station and gardens. It COULD NOT have been better placed. It was ten minutes (if that) walk from the main station, along wide pavements, amongst shops that made our teen girls drool. The hotel has a simple entrance, a small reception but the welcome was tremendous. We were given a map with lots of annotated notes for the main places we needed to find. The lift is tiny and very oldfashioned but it went where it needed to go with our cases ! We were very lucky to have front bedrooms and the rooms were simple, pleasant and clean with tea/coffee, complimentary water, a decent tv and decent lighting. The ensuite was very nice, very clean and had nice complimentary bottles etc. The window was smallish (4th floor) but the view over the gardens and straight up to the Castle was stunning, at all times of the day and night.
Breakfast was plentiful, plenty of fruit and cereal choices followed by your choice of an abundance of cooked items.
The small bar was really nice, open for a nightcap or coffee quite late and there were several rooms around to sit and relax and read in. It was generally quiet.
We didnt eat in the Restaurant - '100' - but wished we had to be honest and we would have received a 20% discount on menu prices.
The staff, chambermaids, waiters, barmen, reception were all very pleasant, friendly and helpful.
There are hop on/off city tour buses going past the hotel every 20 mins, the Castle is ten-15min walk, depending on if you go via the roads or through the gardens and up the zig-zag path up the hill. Royal Mile is a 10 min walk.
Would recommend going on the city tour open top bus - ticket lasts 24 hours so you can ride it all and get your bearings and the part which drives past Salisbury Crags and the view up to Arthurs Seat is just stunning scenery. From the Castle, every direction shows up an amazing view, over the city, over the estuary and out to the incredible rocky outcrops.
I cannot recommend this welcoming hotel and this beautiful city enough. Bags of Scottish charm and all very small and main parts in easy reach. By train, approx 5 hrs from London straight to the heart of it.
The only negative might have been a slightly odd smell in the reception area but it doesnt go further. It depends what type of hotel you like, this is very traditional, some may say a little old fashioned but we loved it and would not hesitate to recommend and return.
