This establishment is quite quaint from the outside...walking in your view changes and you think Hmmmmm! What am I doing here? Laminated letters above the restaurant door spell BISTR (yes the O has fallen off and not been replaced). Venturing further you find a tired and dated room in a hotel - no style, ancient furniture, dated table settings etc.
HOWEVER - the food, typical pub grub but (from what we saw) all from scratch. Stunningly delicious garlic mushrooms quite evidently done in the chef's own garlic bread crumb. Accompaniced by a delicious salad garnish. I followed with scampi which was the same as you would get anywhere else but the most stunning chips in the world. Lasagne is freshly cooked, as is macaroni. This IS only a typical pub grub menu BUT the chef executes it with style and finnesse. £9 for 2 courses the same as a Brewers Fayre when you go off peak but ten or more times better.
The service is not much - but they are friendly - just not the best waitresses in the world - not so attentive and quite forgetful, but the food does make up for it. It probably did not help that being served just before us was a party of 15 or so which took up all the time of the serving staff. Accept that you are in a small town and it is quite acceptable.
I live 30 miles away from here but would happily go back any time and go out of my way to visit here. I am dreadful for judging a book by its cover and walking in did really not wantto go any further - but the food did completely change my perception. Great for relaxed pub lunches and teas.
