“Catwoman's Christmas Meal with Family”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

We often come here for a meal on Saturday night but unfortunately on 26 December 2011 we were really let down with the service, the food and the chaos all around us. There did not appear to be any additional staff for the festive season and the regular staff were literally run off their feet. They did try to cope as best they could but were overwhelmed by the sheer numbers coming through the door. Bookings for this event were made some months ago and despite this we heard that there had been an overbooking and we were changed from our original table to a banquette - which is not ideal as it is at the door and you had to shuffle along the seat to get in and out. The first course arrived and the potatoes on one plate were raw. Took some time to find a member of staff to change it. The main course was the carvery and even here where there is normally two people serving only one lone woman was on duty. We were offered a choice of dessert and even here they could not get the difference between custard and brandy sauce. As for getting additional drinks this just was not possible. We did ask for coffee and were advised that our order would be taken one they had got the orders from another two tables. We simply got our bill and left having not spent exactly the happiest of times at Christmas. The Innkeepers Lodge need to get their act in gear and employ more staff and the furnishings could do with a deep clean - which incidentally I have advised them of previously. Who wants to sit on marked chairs you do not know what you are sitting on. Cleanliness, service and the quality of food were a big let down on this occasion.

“Greay value accommodation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

Stayed here 3 times now and always been very happy with accommodation.Very friendly welcome at check in at the bar on this Toby Inn. Room comfortable with en suite facilities and hospitality tray well stocked with tea/coffee biscuits. Substantial Continental Breakfast included in roon rate which can be upgraded to full cooked selection from buffet for£2..50. Bus stop right outside-£1.30 to city centre with very regular service.Would deffinately stay here again.

Room Tip: Nice quiet rooms at back of hotel-front faces on to main road. Having said that had a front facing r...

“Great value hotel, friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

We've just returned from a family break at the hotel. We pre-paid £45 per night and this was excellent value for money for 2 adults and 2 children. The hotel room was small but clean; the only two niggles were the road noise all night despite the room having double glazed windows and the fact that we had a double bed and a double sofa bed which wasn't ideal for our teenage son and 9 year old daughter - we've had a single sofa bed with a separate pull out bed in other hotels which was better for us. However, these are small niggles and the friendly staff, decent quality continental breakfast and tasty, reasonably priced carvery meals made this a great stay for us. The zoo is a 10 minute walk away and there are loads of buses into Edinburgh from just outside the hotel.

“Great Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

Visited the hotel during festival and this was excellent value for money. Avoided the extremely over priced hotels in the city centre at this time. The hotel is on a bus route that was operating all night. Howver as there was 6 of us we opted for a taxi which cost £11 right to the royal mile. Breakfast was also very good quality free for continental or £4.95 for cooked. However while were their there was a promtion on of buy one get one free.Rooms were clean and a good size.

“Decent hotel, great location, let down badly by the bed.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

The hotel was all in all fine considering the price we paid. Breakfast was included but was disappointing. I was expecting a 'selection of cheeses' but was met with a pot of Philadelphia and a miniature package of warm, squishy red Leicester.

There was also cereal, croissants (cold), toast and yogurt.

On the other hand the location is great, with a number of other places nearby to grab breakfast if you prefer.

In fact, the location is the main thing going for this hotel. Buses come past every few minutes or more and they all go to the city centre. The journey takes about ten minutes.

The room itself was okay; small but clean and sufficient. The bed was the big letdown. It completely sunk in when you lay on it, meaning my and my boyfriend ending up essentially rolling into each other in the middle of the bed. I think the bed is a very important part of a hotel (you are there to sleep after all) so this isn't really acceptable.

In addition, the main male member of staff on reception/bar was less than welcoming. Not quite rude but again, didn't make you feel like a welcome guest.

I would consider staying again, only because we got such a good price during the festival and due to the location. However I would definitely look at alternatives first.
