Our room was small but adequate, and very clean. Its basic components were: a (good) double bed, a single small chair, a wardrobe and a flat-screen television. There were lots of little touches that made the room more complete, such as wireless internet, a small fridge that you could turn on yourself if required, a bathrobe, a small set to make coffee/tea/hot chocolate, a decanter of brandy and water bottles, all of which were complementary. The bathroom was also fine, with a toilet and a decent shower with plenty of hot water. The only (small) problem we had was with the flimsy curtains, causing us to wake up early in the morning. Also, the absence of a second chair meant the room was a bit inconvenient to rest in for a couple of hours during the day, but as Edinburgh is such a great city this hardly mattered to us.
The owners were very friendly. Whenever we ran into them they would enquire about our plans for the day, and give us tips, leaflets and travel instructions wherever possible. They steered us to quite a few wonderful places that we might have skipped otherwise! At one point we had a small problem with our toilet (the button to flush broke down), which was fixed instantly. Breakfast was very nice, with a good selection of items cooked to order, as well as a small selection of fruits and breads.
Depending on your point of view the location of this B&B can be either positive or negative. It’s in the northern part of town at walking distance from the Royal Yacht Britannia, about 15 minutes away from the city center by bus (heavily depending on traffic). However, the bus stop is right around the corner from the B&B, and bus services run frequently throughout the day. We knew this in advance, and for us it wasn’t a problem. We liked the relative quiet of the surroundings of our B&B after a busy day in the city, but on the other hand we sometimes had to look quite a bit for a nearby place to eat (the owners could help with that, though).
All-in-all a very nice little B&B with great service, located at a reasonable distance from the city’s main attractions.
Strong points: service, little touches to the room, breakfast.
Weak points: lack of ‘lounging’ ability in the room.
