“Perfectl for us.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2011

We chose here to be closer to Leith tho' not actually in it. Situated next to Victoria Park the area is lovely as is the guesthouse. We chose en-suite and the only thing I'd have wished for is a bath to soothe my "shopped-out" aching legs. The room is decorated in a modern style, the bed extremely comfy. Wee complimetery toiletries, biscuits with the tea/coffee making facilities and flat screen tv with some Sky channels. The decanter of sherry proved just to tempting and we did imbibe after returning from our dinner down in Leith. Breakfast was great -everything you could ask for was there. Thanks Gill for a classy stay. Make time to read Gills tips in her welcome notes - you'll find a nice walk down to Leith amongst others.

“Edinburgh's Best Bet BY FAR”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2011

The hosts were extremely accommodating even with the volcano disrupting our travel plans. We were only able to stay one night because of the volcano and the gracious hosts only charged us for one night. If that weren't enough, they provided us with the right change to take the bus to the castle! The place is immaculate and full of high end furniture. The room was like in a mansion. There was a parking lot for our tiny rental car and the place was safe. Breakfast was delicious, not to mention so filling we didn't need lunch until 3pm! We look forward to when we can return and stay at the Bonnington again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

“Nice B&B, clean & very good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2011

Our room was small but adequate, and very clean. Its basic components were: a (good) double bed, a single small chair, a wardrobe and a flat-screen television. There were lots of little touches that made the room more complete, such as wireless internet, a small fridge that you could turn on yourself if required, a bathrobe, a small set to make coffee/tea/hot chocolate, a decanter of brandy and water bottles, all of which were complementary. The bathroom was also fine, with a toilet and a decent shower with plenty of hot water. The only (small) problem we had was with the flimsy curtains, causing us to wake up early in the morning. Also, the absence of a second chair meant the room was a bit inconvenient to rest in for a couple of hours during the day, but as Edinburgh is such a great city this hardly mattered to us.

The owners were very friendly. Whenever we ran into them they would enquire about our plans for the day, and give us tips, leaflets and travel instructions wherever possible. They steered us to quite a few wonderful places that we might have skipped otherwise! At one point we had a small problem with our toilet (the button to flush broke down), which was fixed instantly. Breakfast was very nice, with a good selection of items cooked to order, as well as a small selection of fruits and breads.

Depending on your point of view the location of this B&B can be either positive or negative. It’s in the northern part of town at walking distance from the Royal Yacht Britannia, about 15 minutes away from the city center by bus (heavily depending on traffic). However, the bus stop is right around the corner from the B&B, and bus services run frequently throughout the day. We knew this in advance, and for us it wasn’t a problem. We liked the relative quiet of the surroundings of our B&B after a busy day in the city, but on the other hand we sometimes had to look quite a bit for a nearby place to eat (the owners could help with that, though).

All-in-all a very nice little B&B with great service, located at a reasonable distance from the city’s main attractions.

Strong points: service, little touches to the room, breakfast.
Weak points: lack of ‘lounging’ ability in the room.

“Lovely B and B in Excellent location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2010

Good points- there is a private car park, which is excellent as it saves faffing around parking on the streets with permits etc. The rooms were quite spacious and the information folder was very handy. Rooms were clean and plenty amenities for the time we spent in the room. Breakfasts were lovely. The B and B is near the bus stop into Edinburgh, just a short bus ride around 10 mins into the city and much cheaper than parking. At the time we visited, it was about £1 a trip on the bus each.

Bad Points- At the time of visit I was 6 months pregnant and we were placed on the very top floor so this was very tiring. Also as we were effectively in the roof of the property and the location of the shower made it difficult for my husband to stand up properly in the shower.

“A flushing toilet would have been nice!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

There was good and bad.
The bad: When we arrived at the guest house the lady who greeted us tried to hand us a room key but then realised that we both had our hands full with cases, bags and coats. Rather than offer to carry something for us, which would have been nice, she just commented that our hands were full then asked us to follow her up the stairs.
On arriving in the room she mentioned that the previous guests had a problem with the flush for the toilet. She said her husband had tried to fix it but there was still a problem - yes there was a problem, it doesn't work!!! In this day and age, the one thing that I would say was a resonable expectation, is to have a flushing toilet! We put in a lot of effort trying to get the toilet to flush which was very frustrating.
The kettle, cups, tea and coffee etc are set on a small fridge which means you need to crouch down to make a cup of tea. My partner has a bad knee so this was inconvenient for him.
In the shower room, although there is a hook on the back of the door with a robe, there are no towel rails so there is nowhere to keep a towel near the basin or while you are in the shower. Its little ommissions like that which make a big difference to you impression when you stay somewhere. There was evidence of holes having been covered over on the wall so I think there probably used to be towel rails.

The good: The lady who greeted us, on realising we were going out to a restaurant kindly offered to phone for a taxi for us and came to let us know when it had arrived.
The decanter of sherry in the room is a nice touch.
Having a robe to use is nice.
Breakfast was tasty.

All things considered, £75 was too much to pay for a small room with a non-functioning toilet. When my partner mentioned it as we left, the lady just acknowledged that she was aware of it. We had paid in advance so thought a small refund would have been nice as a gesture of goodwill, however none was offered.
