“Definitely not 4 star!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2011

Stayed at this guesthouse after visiting many other b & bs around England, Ireland and Scotland on a 7 week trip from Australia. Most disappointing place we stayed in. Arrived 1 hour earlier than anticipated because traffic was light, and had to ring to be let into front door, then was asked 'I guess you want a cooked breakfast' when that is what we had paid for, so...Yes. Husband had to hunt up another roll of toilet paper as there was little on the roll in the bathroom, and no spare one in sight. The shower was blocked, so we had to make our shower extra quick, after the hot water took several minutes to come through, as we were in fear of overflow onto the floor, and the towels were paper thin. There were no extra pillows in the room. The shelf holding tea/coffee collapsed and broke one of the cups, but as there was no-one around to ask, we made do with the one that was left. If you want to communicate with a person during your stay, don't bother going here. We got the feeling we were definitely there to make the owner money (as you would expect), but he wanted to do it with as little effort as possible. The one good thing about our stay was that we were able to walk into the city centre in 15 minutes, and we found a great little restaurant around the corner.

“Good but pricey”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

I recently stayed at the MW Townhouse and had a decent experience here. The staff was helpful and friendly even though we rarely saw them. The room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was great and the staff was very attentive. As far as location it is not in the city center but is about a 15 min walk. The hotel was right next to the bus though which brought you to city center in 5 minutes which was perfect! There is also free wifi in the lobby and supposedly the rooms. We were able to get the wifi in the lobby but unfortunately could not connect in the room.

My only complaint was the price. We happened to be visiting during Fringe festival and the price was obviously marked up considerably. We stayed in 4 star hotels in Ireland and London for cheaper. If you can get a reasonable price I would definitely recommend staying here.

“Not 4 star hotel in my view”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

I stayed for 3 nights in a triple room with sister and friend. Check in was from 3 pmWe arrived at 2 pm and had to phone the owner who had his number on the front door and he gave us the code for the front door. The key to our room called Talisker were in a drawer in the lobby. We left our bags and headed into Edinburgh. So it wasn't until late in the evening that i discovered that my single bed was a small camp bed /putyou up style bed with one pillow. I spent a very uncomfortable and sleepless night on a very small lumpy mattress. The whole bed squeeked every time i turned over to try and get comfortable. I had expected a proper bed for the price i paid. It was not stated anywhere that the triple room would consist of a put you up/ camp bed style bed that wouldonly be suitable for an exhausted 4 year old. This simply is not what anyone would expect for a 4 star rating and i had paid 4 star prices to be squashed under the eaves on a camp bed.The Talisker room is described as a Twin/Double /Triple but the website description goes on to stae that it is a Twin or Double: this is clearly the case as the double (twin beds ) were pushed to one side to squeeze the camp bed under the eaves. This leaves very little room between the beds and makes it difficult to open the drawers on the other side of the double bed. Also you can't sleep with the windows open because the hotel is siuated on a busy main road and the traffic noise is constant. After complaining, the following morning about the camp bed, we were moved to the Tomintoul Room opposite and i had a normal sized single bed. I had to ask for another pillow. The tomintoul room is again described as a twin/ Double/Triple room . Once again the double bed is pushed over to accomodate the single bed under the eaves .Mind your heads. Also the room description states it has a bath but it doesn't matter how hard you look, the bath is nowhere to be found in that room ! The key to this room should have opened the front door which it didn't so it was a good job that we had retained the door code from the previous day ! Do you think i got a refund for being on a camp bed ? NO i didn't and also the balance for the stay was taken on the day we arrived which we weren't told about and not on checkout which is the usual practice .
The website states , "Expect luxurious standards of comfort and a hearty breakfast " What the website doesn't tell you is that the Hearty breakfast isn't included in the price ! What is included in the B and B price is a continental breakfast. You are charged extra for a cooked breakfast. The window of opportunity to " enjoy " your breakfast is only one hour from 8 until 9 am. shame for those wanting to enjoy a holiday lie in.
A lso the description of " a green approach ensuring use of local eco friendly heating and water system ", is questionable as the toilet in the Tomintoul Room uses hot water to flush which isn't my idea of Eco friendly !
The hotel's situation is near a bus stop and i recommend getting a day ticket for £3 20 on the Lothian bus network as there are numerous Lothian buses in and around Edinburgh.
In my view this is NOT 4 star and our criticisms will be forwarded to the Edinburgh tourist Board.

“More 3.5 star rating”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2011

The bed was comfortable and it was good to have parking but felt that just the minimum was done in order to attain a 4 star rating which I felt was not deserved. Usually payment is made at the end of the stay but the payment was taken by visa on booking. Hence when the stay was sortened by a day a 10% charge was made to reimburse. Breakfast was only "just" and again the minimum was offered. It looked like staff from the backpackers was obtained as different people served breakfast and someone newevery day was learning the ropes.

Very very friendly owners; parking behind the B&B; clean and well furnished rooms;
a 10 min. walk to the city center; also buses nearby; if we could, we will give
12 points from the Netherlands!!
