Having seen the website and positive reviews we were looking forward to our 2 night stay at the end our our Scottish tour. Our first impression of our room was of disappointment. The decor was dated and the the room felt dreary. The bed spread was grubby and had some stains on, as were the cushions on the bed and chair. There were no towel rails in the shower room, the shower was tiny and there was dust on the top of the fabric headboard. A lightbulb in the ceiling light was out. There was a general lack of attention to detail, although the overall cleanliness was ok.
Encouraged by literature in the room seeking feedback, I relayed my lack of satisfaction to the young man in charge. He was courteous and having shown him the areas of concern, he said he would feed my comments into the system for the proprietors. Shortly after, I was handed a mobile phone with the proprietor on the other end. I was astounded by the ensuing conversation. Having explained my concerns, these were disputed on the basis of a recent AA inspection. My request for her to come and see for herself was rejected. It was suggested I check out, if I wasn't happy, as the room could easily be resold. I was also told that everyone else in the house was paying more that the £120 a night for a double that we were charged and that we were 'only staying for 2 nights' . (the inference, I believe, that this was an inconvenience). I was accused of trying to bully her into reducing the rate. There was no sense of being a valued customer!
The manager returned to try to address the issues and shortly after ,the house keeper brought a clean bedspread and removed the bed cushions.
The following morning we were moved to a different room, which was brighter and roomier. However, there was stll a lamp with a dead bulb, no towel rail and a stained white cushion on the seat of the chair. I didn't bother to bring these to anyone's attention, as I assumed they could see them as well as I could. The entrance hall was stacked, for most of our stay ,with bags of dirty bedding, presumably awaiting collection.
On a positive note, the young, foreign staff were friendly, helpful and polite and produced a good breakfast. They were available and responsive, We found the distance from the centre to be a 20-25 minute quite brisk walk, and the bus service was close by. In summary, for us it was a matter of value for money. Even acknowledging that this was Edinburgh during the festival, when prices are hiked up, the standard fell far short of our expectation, for the money charged and the attitude of the proprietor at the end of a telephone line left a sour taste at the end of an otherwise lovely holiday. Needless to say, we won't be returning!

as a long term member of the team at aarajura i am so angry to read this review from these guests. we bent over backwards to satisfy their hundreds of demands. we spent hours re doing their room, then moving them rooms then offering them money off. their complaints were so unfounded and everyone here and other guests who heard them all said they were just trying it on to get a free stay. this of course i am sure they will deny but i can assure readers that all they say is not true. we were really challenged by these people and would never ever allow them back in to our guest house. they ruined our 2 days whilst they were staying and put out other guests who were having a lovely time. i hope that wherever they choose to stay next is prepared for a mass of confrontation before they even say hello.
