We stayed as a family in the Lairg as a one night stop over in Edinburgh. It's in a great location as only 10 minutes walk to the centre of the city, but in a quieter, more residential area.
All the staff were friendly, effficient and were happy to provide information on request. The hotel seems to have had a refurb quite recently and whilst a little quirky in places, provides clean and comfortable bedrooms. We had a family room (sleeps 3) on the ground floor and a double on the 2nd floor. There are a 'four poster bedrooms' which my be available on request at no extra charge! Have a look on the website for pictures. The staircase is quite steep and there's no lift, so maybe worth mentioning your preference if this is a problem. The bathrooms were cleans and looked to be recently refurbed too. There weren't really any toiletries (just soap), but don't people usually take their own these days? Alternatively if you are travelling with hand luggage only - there's convenience shops in the area were you can buy most of what you need.
Breakfast had a good choice including your usual cereals, toast, pastries and choice of cooked breakfast. The sauages maybe aren't to everyones taste - more like bratwurst - but all is freshly cooked to your preference.
Check-in/out were hassle free and we were asked if we'd like to pay on departure - which I always find to be more polite.
The only thing that was a bit of an issue was the parking. If you arrive by car - try and get a place in the pay and display area on the street. It's free after 6:30pm until 8:30am Mon-Sat). You may need to nip out before breakfast to pay until checkout but the alternative is to pay expensive overnight parking in a multistorey! The hotel will advise you though, as to where is the best priced.
There isn't a restaurant in the hotel for lunch or evening meals, but you are so close to others that it doesn't really matter. We had a meal at the Mercat Pub which was 5 mins away and had a really nice, averagely priced meal. Ask where this is at reception - as they recommended it.
Have to be honest...I wasn't too sure what to expect due to the price (in my opinion it was low - about £25p.p.p.n.) and there were a few mixed reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. This suited our one night stay and would have been grand if we had stayed longer.
