Having came across a deal on Groupon for a luxery 2/3 night stay in Castle Apartments with kitchen and bathroom, television etc, a bottle of bubbly, chocolates and a zebra burger meal for 2 in a restuarant, we thought we would snap up the bargain.
We arrived in Edinburgh at 15:00 roughly, wondered about for nearly an hour (check in time was 15:00) trying to find the place that was pictured on Groupon. After wondering with 2 holdalls and other bags, we got an email sent to our phone asking us to go to 6 Queen Street to pick up keys. No one had mentioned anything about 'picking up keys' so we reluctantly jumped a taxi to this address. There we were met by a lady who's english was not very good, who asked for EVERY detail regarding our bank card for secusity reasons (indcluding the 3 security numbers on the back... of course we gave the wrong number..) and a small bag with a mini bottle of cheap white wine, 6 chocolates wrapped in tissue paper and our key.
After this we jumped a taxi (another £6) back up to this address we were given for the room. The taxi let us out close to a lane and advised this was the address stated. We walked down this dark lane and checked a few doors to see if there were any signs for Castle Apartments. There were none but we were told by a polish person that 'the blue door' was it. We had to type in a little code which opened the door, walk up about 100 stairs to the very top, with smahed glass bottles and beer puddles on the way.. got to the very top and there were 2 cleaners in cleaning our room! Bearing in mind check in time was 15:00 and it was now closer 16:00. There were no appologies for them still being in the room, they just 'hurried up' a little bit more.
The room was not what we paid £100 for. It was a small room, 2 single beds pushed together, a tv that didnt work, remote controls for the tele which had no battery's in them, our kitchen was a microwave and mini beer fridge on a windowsill, the floors were all uneven with thin worn carpets, the bathroom was very small and had no bath, the taps constantly made gurgling noises and would randomly splurt and explode with water which we would have to go turn off, and the doors could have fell down with the slightest touch. The shower would go from boiling hot to freezing point in about 10 minutes (enough for one shower) and the bathroom floor was a discusting dirty old peice of black and white (yellow due to age) vinyl.. god only knows how long it had been down for.
We were discusted with what we were given and when we walked out to go out for dinner, cleaners seemed to giggle and speak in polish as if they knew we were paying to stay in a hell hole.
To top off a horrible stay, we were awoken at 08:00 with a fire alarm. This would have been fine BUT... we were at the very top of a dark spiral staircase. We were more feart for our safety going down the stair case with all the glass etc, than being burned in a fire. HAD there actually been a fire.. there was no way for us to get out. The fire warning sign which was on the back of the door suggested, " If you find yourself in a situation with a fire, try attack the fire as much as you can, and leave through way of entrance." Unnacceptable and in my eyes, illegal.
Avoid this company for rooms in the future. What should have been an enjoyable luxery stay for my partner and myselfs anniversary, turned out to be a 2 night stay in something worse than sleeping in a bin. £100 down the drain.
