“In need of a refurb”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I visited this hotel recently for a city break. Location was great for getting to all the attractions, and the staff were lovely, but not much else I can say that made this hotel any more than average. The standard City Double Room was a bit disappointing in comparison to other 4 star hotels in UK cities. Firstly the room was freezing when we entered and never really warmed up nicely throughout our stay. Housekeeping had not done a great job with the room prior to arrival - it was very dusty and lamps were not working. Although the bed was very comfortable, sheets were a bit tatty with some holes and old marks. Actually towels, chairs and carpet all looked rather warn. Nothing was dirty but a good dusting, a soft refurb and new sheets/towels are definitely needed.

The bathroom was fresh, modern and clean, although i did think the amenities were sparse. There was shampoo, shower gel and soap. Conditioner, shower cap and body lotion would not have gone a miss. Also a safe, mini fridge and a hotel information pack would all have been nice to have.

The pool was nice if you manage to go at a quiet time. The sauna did not get hot when we used it. Not sure if it was broken or just the temperature it is kept at.

Breakfast was very nice and the staff were really on point with the service considering it was really busy. I was quite impressed with the way they handled rush hour breakfast, and the quality/temperature of food was spot on.

I had paid a low rate and was not in the room much, so I let issues slide. Had I have paid the standard public rate, I probably would have asked for a change of room, one that was warmer and with furnishing and bedding that was of better quality.

You can tell this was a nice modern hotel when it first opened but it is slowly loosing its charm. If all the issues above were fixed, I would recommending the hotel without second thought, but from my experience, i would only recommend it if you get a very good deal and are not fussy about quality of fittings and fixtures in the room.

“Excellent location, very helpful staff, hotel looking a bit tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

The Good
- Excellent location for the city centre with, as other reviewers have said, a great view of the castle from the 5th floor restaurant
- The staff were very friendly and helpful
- Beds very comfortable

The Not so Good
- The initial bill that I was presented with (under the door) gave a rate which was more than twice what I had actually booked. Apparently a clerical error. The booking was made via booking.com so this shouldn't happen
- The breakfast service was OK but my cooked breakfast arrived within 3 - 4 minutes of being ordered meaning that I didn't have time to finish the cereal
- Items ordered at breakfast, that the waitress had asked if I wanted (sauce to go with breakfast and toast), didn't arrive so had to be followed up
- Some of the decor in the hotel (inside and outside the rooms) is looking a bit worn or badly done.

Overall: The location and the staff make this potentially a really good hotel. However, the mistakes (particularly on the room rate) and the tired decor take the 'shine' off the experience.

“Expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Apex hotel prior to christmas....

Long drawn out queue for 20 minutes at checkin, room carpet had stains as did the bed cover together with the previous guests bill and person details left on the desk. Rooms felt they needed an upgrade just like the ones in dundee.

Bed and bath room normal standard and no issues to report with a good nights sleep, but felt the bar was expensive together with the cost of the breakfast.

Location if you dont Edinburgh is a Taxi from the station or Airport, but walking distance to most sights. Gym is situated in the next hotel building which can be issue.
